M3 Dog Leg Into 02?

Recommended Posts

hi all,

after a 9 year gap, ive just bought another 02 to race, sadly i sold my 02 dogleg and as they arnt exactly common, am pondering trying to use a 265 e30 m3 box.

if my memory serves correctly its simply too bulky to fit without major tunnel mods, dont mind doing a bit of panel beating to get it in but dont really want to have to cut the tunnel out and weld a bigger one in

can anyone shed any light?

thanks in adavance

If you're going to that amount of trouble,

someone here had figured out how to adapt

the E36 gearbox to the M10.  Good ratios,

and a lot cheaper to obtain.  Similar fit issues, though.

I ran an E21 5- speed for a while, with a tall (4.27) diff.

That actually worked pretty well.  Not ideal, but better

than the gaps in a stock 4- speed.

Oh, and Ken Blasko has gears for the stock box

that will make it a close ratio.  Probably the most

elegant way to do it...

thanks,

my old 02 ran a 4.37 with dogleg, never needed first gear though other than driving onto the trailer!

i know with  machining its possible to put an e21 small six dogleg internals into the front section of an 02 4 speed, but e21 small six dolglegs are also rare so command 02 dogleg money anyway and have slightly inferior ratios.

who is Ken Blasko? that sounds an interesting option

Oh, I meant the generic overdrive E21 transmission from the M10.  Still has the standard ratios, but the

OD tightens up the last shift.  Probably not as common if you're not in the US- it's all we got from 80 to 83.

Ken is on this board- he'll probably catch us talking about him and chime in.  He's been actively trying to

upgrade the 2002 to keep it relevant in racing, and the gearset was in development last I heard.

It only needs another inch in height and massaging on the sides from what I've read from a couple guys that done it on the forum.
I just bought one myself, getting ready to put in soon. I'll be using a M10 bellhousing also on the 265/5 crpost-38743-13788680956586_thumb.jpg

The short story, Graham: We combine/modify/customize a Getrag 242 4 speed gearbox to get ratios of 3.0, 1.6, 1.3 and 1.0 (not a whole lot of use for 1st gear other than the paddock, but 2-4 work pretty well). At the 3:10 minute mark of this video, you can hear the shift points clearly: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/144989-race-video-bmws-and-porsches/

Best to send message to discuss. -KB

hmm thats interesting, massaging i can do. i dont really want to cut the tunnel about, as it will limit where i can race the car, but im now thinking if i can get the whole engine and box sitting lower.............

from some perspectives the m3 box is a good move, its very very very strong i ran one behind a turbo motor that had 460lbft of torque for years and it never protested, plus they are newer  and much more common so not to hard to find in the first place or get rebuild parts. downside, they are heavier and have the worst ratios of all the doglegs, and technically are not correct for the bodyshell so again it limits slightly where i can race.

kens box sound great, although im not sure with it being a 4 speed so having 3 usable gears  the ratios will be close enough to suit a 9,000 rpm motor, i will get the calculator out.

thanks for teh replies guys

Hi - you have to cut off the top of the tunnel, add height and spread the sides. But hey, easy as no one has to see how rubbish your welding is, just make it strong. Remember the 265 is also a bit heavier than the other options, but it's also pretty bullet-proof.

As mentioned in an earlier post, there are adapter plates out there that let you use e36 trannies with the m10.  The e36 trannies plentiful and cheap, with desirable ratios, and strong.  I know Ernie Bellos at Bello's Motorsports in West Palm Beach, FL has had some plates made up.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
