Help Please M42 Wiring By Colours Walkthrough

ok so i would be very grateful if someone could possibly take a little time to walk me through which wires i need to use and where i need to wire them and above all what their purpose is and why they go to a specific location.

unfortunately the connector has been removed so using pin numbers is not a help which is why i have struggled with the classic daily guide.

now i am wiring up an m44 from a z3 which uses the x20 connector same as the e36. however from what i have learnt is that the main wires are all the same colours regardless of the engine connector. I have also found i can trace wires back from the ecu so i can probably cope if some of the wires arent the same.

I have already had a go at wiring the engine up but i think it must be wrong as i dont even get relay noise or starter solenoid noise.

regards

Dave

you need to study the ETM for that engine.  all the colors are listed along with the pin locations.  bmw does use pretty standard colors for the various functions, so also search this forum for S14 and M42 conversions.  the wire/color alignment has been detailed several times for those harnesses.

even with someone elses info, i would still physically test every wire in the harness so you personnally know they are good and where they go.  a couple hours with a continuity tester is all it takes and could save you many headaches after you get the engine in and it does not work...

this may help as a start.

the internet is a wonderful thing. search "BMW M44 ETM".  :)

thanks guys i have been using the z3 specific bmw troubleshooting schematics but its where they go to on the 02 that im struggling with. i  think im just looking to see if with the m42 swap there is need for more than 12v from the engine, 12v to the engine, main engine ground and an ignition connection for starting. I definately struggle with the electrics! also im sure once i ditch the ews i wont have anywhere near the same headache. will elt you know how i get on

im assuming the big fat red wire is the 12v to power the engine and the large brown wires are engine ground? as these are seperate to the ecu wiring. black and yellow appears to be start signal.

also is 'alternator field wire' just the negative terminal of the alternator? says it should be the blue wire. this is from skipsfcr's swap

regards

Dave

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
