Exhausting Problem With Headpipe And Muffler Connection

I just changed out a local muffler shop "special" for a stock bosal system including a TII exhaust manifold (just had to throw that in there). anywho, I have tightened the three bolts holding the muffler to the downpipe (the flared pieces with a donut gasket in between) and there is still movement of the end of the system, i.e. I can grab the end of the tailpipe and turn the whole thing up and down. I want to keep the system stock without taking out the flares and the donut. Does anyone know of a way to secure these pieces so the pipe will not turn.

Tighten it some more.  That joint should lock solid when the bolts are snugged up- and then that, and the pipe support that 

attaches to the back of the transmission, should hold it tight to the engine.  Then it moves as the engine moves, and your

supports should allow that.

believe so, it's not one of the fibre metallic donuts, it has a thinner cross section and all steel or cast iron, can't be sure which (probably steel) I've tightened the bolts to the point the flange is beginning to bend. no leaks anywhere in the system,however.

a photo or 2 of your under car would cut to the chase here in offering

a positive suggestion

 

do you have the support bracket at the rear of the gearbox ?

without that exhaust support your pissn into a stiff wind  & it will never

stay put for long

Do the above first.

I replaced entire exhaust system last Fall and they worked for me was

1). Connect downpipe to exhaust manifold with gasket in between the tow piece and finger thought 3 nuts

2). Attach support bracket to back of transmission and then to near end of downpipe

Install resonator to downpipe withe dount in between

3). Go back and tighten nuts at exhaust manifold and downpipe

It's good idea to use some high heat anti seize lube on all threads and nuts

Hmm, check the flange and donut interface- I had one exhaust that the flange hit the other flange before putting a good squeeze

on the donut and that thing would slip- the fix was to grind the flange back a bit so the donut got clamped between the flanges 

good-n-tight.

 

that donut/flange interface should be slip- free, and the trans support should help reinforce that.

I'll check the alignment again, could be the flange faces are touching.  the headpipe appears to be angled downward more than the exhaust pipe, i.e. they aren't parallel (assuming they should be) anyone know if the pipes should be parallel ?

They should be close, but that's the one place where you get to adjust for things like

engine droop, flange warp, etc, etc, etc.  so it's not too uncommon for it to 

be off by a little.  The donut should let it do that.

 

Sure you have the right donut?  If it was too thin, that would totally do it.
