Nomenclature: 2002 Vs '02 Vs E10

RAS-2002

Recommended Posts

Just curious: when did the 2002 start being referred to as an 'E10'?  I guess I've been in the dark for the 30 years since I last owned a 2002, so please pardon my old-timer ignorance.

I bought my first 2002 new in late 1972, and until I bought my latest (another '72) last year, I hadn't heard of them being called anything but a 2002 or an '02.  When I started going on-line, checking out all the 2002 forums (forae?), I kept seeing references to "E10 this" and "E10 that", along with 2002 info.  For awhile, I had no idea that they were talking about the same thing. When did this 'sea-change' take place?

What terms do you all currently use to refer to your cars?  "My E10"  "My 2002"  "My '02"  "My 02 Bimmer" etc, etc.

Also, I've seen references to 'model 114' and 'model 2552' in regards to 2002s. How do they figure into the scheme of things?

Kripes, I hope I'm not going to be opening up a can of worms....

Thanks for any input.

Bob

If I had to guess, the use of the e10 nomenclature came only after the explosion of BMW models through the '80's and '90's. And the range and number of models within each class seemed to simultaneously expand, while model names were re-cycled for very different cars. To say "535" doesn't tell you whether you're referring to a 1988 or a 2014!

If you asked me in 1973 how I liked my e10, I would have said "Huh?"! Come to think of it, if you ask me today how I like my e10, I'll probably say "Huh?"!

They're all the same car with the exception of the "2552".  I don't know what those numbers refer to.

I call my car (which I've owned for 32 years) an '02 (usually on this board) or a 2002, but I know it's an E10 and also a Model 114.  Just add those numbers to your vocabulary and consider yourself more well-read and knowledgable.

One thing is when you go into a dealership for parts its bloody useless telling them you want the parts for a 2002 BMW as you know whats going to happen , By using the E10 code at least you have a better chance of maybe getting the right part.

I feel as if when your trying to search for things on ebay or the internet when searching for "BMW 2002" or whatever you get information for a BMW made in 2002. With the e10 designation people have created, it gives you in some cases better results. Other than that I see no use. I personally refer to my 2002 as an 02.

I don't know where the 4-digit numbers come from, but doing a part number search on RealOEM shows them. For example, here are search results on applications for the rear wheel bearing seal, part no 33413404161:

I know what an E3 and an E9 are, but I've always thought of the 2002 as a type 114, though never refer to mine that way. It's a "2002". I have it easier with the 2002tii because I say I have a "tii" and that fixes the era the car is from (at least among to cognoscenti). It is only in the past decade I have heard E10 and I did not think that was correct.

Not so, BMW's parts program ETK defines the 2002 as a .... 2002.

Our local bmw has a hard time with me. I called asking about the aero style side skirts for a 2006 m coupe, and they said the m coupe was not made that year. I corrected them saying that the "m3 coupe" came out in 2008, but that the z4 "m coupe" was around in 2006.

I called for parts for my "1973 2002tii" and they got snippy and said "there was no ti in 2002, you must mean the 318ti". i said no... 1973, 2002tii. 2002 is not the year, it is the model. "what model is that? I have never heard of that!"

All the round taillight '02 sedans are Type 114

'02 Tourings are E6

All square taillight '02 sedans are E10

2002 Turbos are E20 chassis

In the BMW labor times program all '02s are referred to as type 114

Nuff said.

From reading the factory 2002 book (the orange cover BMW Profiles one), the two page (pp 24/25) reproduction of the original artwork for the 1966 1600-2 is labeled in the upper left corner "E114."  That covers the "coupe" body--the one imported to the US.  The book refers to the Touring as the 114K (drawing on the subsequent page).  There's no mention of  "E-10" anywhere in the book, nor in the parts book.  However I've also been told that E10 refers to the 02 Touring  body, the E114 being the coupe.  The number 10 would make sense, as the Touring body wasn't introduced until 1971, and follows logically the E3 and E9.  But at least according to the official factory book the whole 02 line was collectively referred to as design E114 (or 114K for the Touring).

UPDATE FEB 2020:  based on Jackie Jouret's 2002 history book, the original 1966 two door sedan was properly termed a "Type 114" vs "E-114."  The E-codes began with the E-3, a body style that post-dated the 1600-2... Just wanted to set the record straight.

Tom, thanks, did not know that and good info. Can you provide a citable source(s) for this? If so, Wikipedia could be updated with the correct info, and G. Serpent could print it out and take it to the dealership when going there...... FB

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
