Mini Rear Discs On 2002?

Recommended Posts

Has anybody checked into using Mini rear discs? Minis use the same 100mm X 4 wheel hole pattern as the 2002.

I've thought about it... Done many rear brake jobs on MINIs. Just haven't taken the time to slide an old MINI rear disk on an '02 hub yet. I suppose I'll do it soon after I replace a MINI rear caliper.

What interests me about the mini setup is that there seems to be no drum used for the parking brake.

Marshal,

The MINI rear brakes are very similar to the VW ones only the calipers actually say BMW on them...

Allbim,

Many vendors sell a VW based kit that works very similar to the MINI rears...

Not familiar with mini brakes. What would be advantage over the VW or wilwood conversion. They have integrated parking brake.

Fewer parts, less weight, possibly more choice of caliper placement, and possibly easier installation.

how is it fewer parts?  VW and Wilwood have two parts. the caliper and the rotor.  the parking brake is integral to the caliper.  there is no "drum brake" for the parking brake like newer bmw's have.

less weight?

not sure how it will be easier?

For those thinking it may be a good fit..... Keep in mind the front brakes would need to be larger than the volvo bbk to begin to be properly balanced.  Then add the fact that Mini has had a HOST of different rotors equipped on their cars (some listed for as few as 6 months of production) I know because I spent a half a day making a spread-sheet concordance for them.

1) it would almost certainly be heavier

2) same amount of parts (as Marshall has said)

3) Same difficulty of installation.

In short it would be the vw kit by another name....

Unless... one just HAD to have the caliper say BMW on it instead of VW.

There are no BMWs that I know of that use the MINI rear calipers. As far as I have noticed (haven't looked it up yet to be sure) there are at least two different rear calipers for MINIs; first and second gen and then Countryman ones might be different. All the MINI rear calipers I've seen say BMW on them...

MINI part numbers are separate from BMW numbers. There are other parts that cross over but have separate BMW and MINI part numbers.

Until I started this thread, I din't know that the VW rear disk brake setup did not use the inside of the disk-hat for the parking brake.

So when I looked at a Mini, I thought I found a way to reduce the number of parts and weight. I know better now.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
