Sales Brochures

Anyone know anything about either of these '02 sales brochures I stumbled on over the weekend?

The first (car on cover) is written in English, but appears to be for EU market based on flat turn signals, rear plate light in the bumper, etc., etc., plus they list the 1602 and 1802 as available versions along with the 2002 base and tii. No date on it, but all roundies with black dashes.

The second (white cover) is also in English and appears to be for the U.S. market based on the usual clues and only the 2002 base and tii specs listed in the back. Again no date, but all roundies so I'm guessing 72/73?

Also picked up the Mobile Traditions special addition catalog they put out back in 2002 full of history and all of the '02 related paraphernalia they sell (hats, pens, pins, prints, models, etc). Some of them are cool. I'm just hoping they are not all NLA!

Production date is usually on the bottom of the back page (or inside the back cover), below the "part" number and above where it's printed.  See the example below, from 2/76.

I have searched them both carefully and no recognizable dates. On the back or inside back at the bottom both say "Printed in Western Germany" and below that "Order no 01 81 9790 011" on the first one, and "Order Number 01 869 791 006" on the second. Different printer maybe?

I have a copy of the second catalogue, with the white cover announcing the 2002 and the 2002tii.  It, like many of the early '70's BMW catalogues I have seen, is undated.  I haven't decided how to date it: '72 or '73.  Or was it, like the two '75-'76 catalogues, designed to last for a couple years?  The tii engine illustrated has plastic intake runners, so that says '72.  But aren't those '73-style front bumper guards (or did Euro versions, which may be pictured, have these guards before '73?)?  And what about the tii's HP and compression?  Aren't 125 HP and 9.0:1 CR indicative of '73 cars?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
