And, to Peter's point.  If you do swap out the bumpers, go with the short sided early rear.  The early bumpers 1. dont have the trim, as he mentioned.  2. the short sided rear bumper will be less work to install and it all fits into the stamped recesses of the body.  Rendering the squaretail meets 1600-2 look that is found on the 2002 Turbo.

I wonder if the PO was a CCA member and nicely left the sticker and grill badge on the car.

 

No front marker lights typically means the front fenders were replaced prior to paint.  They also removed the lower rub trim on the sides.  Paint looks very nice!

 

Your car would look really nice with a set of the Rota "Alpina replica" wheels - get the 15" ones for easier tire choices.

I have a '73tii project. If I wanted to do Euro bumper, I would need to replace the 2 1/2 mph brackets with the '72 brackets and move the side mounting points in as the bumper sides will be going in.

 

It appears that the bumpers themselves are the same.  The fronts have the '73 style over riders, while the rear has caps.  I have not take the bumper off yet to study it.  Is the bumper rubber on the main pieces one single piece that goes along the entire length and under the over riders?  If so, I would need a Euro center if I wanted to go with Euro license plate lights and caps.

 

The other issue would be going for 'deep light bucket' grills which I have.

That is a sweet car but those wheels suck indeed.

 

Let me give you something to think about before you jump into converting bumpers.

 

I was in your boat about 8 months ago.  Long time BMW owner, first and recent e10 owner.  When I bought my 76, I hated the insipid, US crash mandated bumpers with a passion.  When I looked at the car, the bumpers were all I saw.  But that was the car I found, and that is the car I have.  And I did all the same things you are doing now; I sourced older bumpers, tried to figure out how to mount them, etc., and decided to do it.  

 

But the longer I lived with the car, those ugly bumpers became a little less ugly.  All of your children are beatiful to you, even if they are ugly ducklings indeed.  So, now I've decide to not change the bumpers.  they aren't the bumpers that came on the car, it will never really be the same as a proper roundie even if I changed the bumpers, and there are lot of other things I can do to compensate without the hassle (wheels, tires, interior, etc).  Ask yourself this: you have an amazing looking time machine of a 2002.  In 20 years, when you give it to your kid, would you rather be giving him a little jewel of a 2002 as it came and what that is worth, or a 2002 posing as something its not?  As you will soon see by reading the posts here, there are about a 1,000 people who will spot it a mile away.  Cheeze, I swear half the people here can tell you not only the year the car was made by the VIN numbers, but who the foreman was that day when the car rolled off the line.  :-)

 

I'm not trying to cause offense by anyone who converted their bumpers.  I appreciate the work.  I'm only suggesting that maybe live with the car for 6 months first.  Change out those god aweful wheels.  Do whatever else you feel you need to do to bring the car up to spec.  And then see how you feel about it becuase once you do it, there is no going back - at least not easily.

 

Either way, it is a super looking car.  Best wishes with it.

I'm ~one year into ownership of my '75 and I had the bumper debate, i.e. leave the bumpers as is, suck 'em in, convert to Euro, some sort of combination. I went with a early shorty/no rub strip rear using Anton's mounts (which are terrific) and Pierre's (Kamei) repro air dam. Car is at shop now to fill the holes and paint touch up. Lots of options.

The funny thing about this is, the original poster lives one street away from me, or at least he did when he put up this post.  We saw each other driving around in our 02s and finally connected. 

 

He and his wife are super nice people.  They are living abroad right now, but I'm guessing they will be back here at some point.  Their 02 is in great condition, and I believe is slumbering in storage nearby, with the original bumpers still on it.  But I think they procured everything to do the chrome bumper changeover.  

 

Will be nice to have them back in the fold at some point.
