Does anyone know where I can get some VIN information on a 1976 2002 (2741387).  I am trying to see if it was a California car that had the 1975 emissions gear on it and is generally less desirable to the 76.

It was manufactured March/April '76 if that helps.

The emission sticker in the engine bay should tell you that.

And if that's missing, snap and post photos of the driver's side of your intake manifold, just under the carb, your exhaust manifold, or of the magnetic valve thingies that hang on the firewall ('76 CA versions and all '75 versions have 3 of these, red, white, and black-capped; '76 49-state versions have 2, white and black).

Not that this means that much. The thermal reactor (which is the difference between the two systems) adds some complexity and probably steals a few horsepower, assuming it's still installed -- many systems have long since been removed. It doesn't dramatically change the car.

EDIT: Of course, if you have a 49-state version, your car also came with the smoking-hot 3.90 rear-end (I call it the "Prius beater") rather than the 3.64 of the CA version.
