A Way To Get Customers

Recommended Posts

I just moved. Having some time to snoop around today, I stopped at a shop "bmw specialists." Figured I might try and get connected. Here is a short exchange.

Can I help you?

Let me introduce myself, Daron. You ever come across any M10 work ?

Why would you want one of those ?

Oh, not about want, I have one. Just moved and wanted to get connected.

To what, I don't work on those 320's.

Ok, I see, anybody around do bench work?

What do you want to do?I guess I can do brakes and maybe change out a radiator.

Hmmmm. Thats ok I'm pretty good down to the crank and bore, but if I need some machine work I might need a reference.

Oh, yeah, no.

Car runs, would have brought it over, but I still need to get it transported here.

Cost more to ship than its worth I say, I can do work on your Honda though.

Yeaaaah, not exactly about worth is it? Have a nice day.

Ray, some folks around these parts on the FAQ, it was mostly about the shop being literally around the corner and having someplace to unload my BS.

Noted.

By the way, I used to live in Portsmouth.

Cheers,

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P

Chances are that local dealerships (really) outsource the rebuilding of the older engines as their techs either can't do it or the manager has decided it's more cost efficient to have someone else do it and mark it up.  Look for an OLD guy who works the parts counter--he'll know what an '02 is and a pleasant chat will yield the identity of their favorite machinist.  Bring your car and visit the machinist in person, probably at lunch time or close to closing.  Skilled machinists will often value a chance to work directly with an involved owner of a classic car, and you'll get a chance to scope out the shop.  Find out about their warranty policy and get a basic idea on prices.

Find out who sells parts in the area for older BMWs. Then ask them who works in them. That's what I did to find a group of mechanics when I got mine.

I'm pretty sure he (I stereotype 'he' here)  didn't know what an M10 was...

Consider he said "I don't work on 320s" I would say he does.

He just probably doesn't have any interest and that is probably not the focus of his business. He is in the business to make money, and it is a lot easier to make money fixing Hondas and new BMWs. It does not mean he is a bad person, so maybe give him the benefit of the doubt.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
