Horrible Noise In Rear, Help!

Recommended Posts

I've had my 76 for a few months now, and it just started making a loud noise that sounds like metal on metal when i turn left while taking off from a stop thru 1st and 2nd. I can only assume its either a wheel bearing or the differental or an axle, but the sound seems to be coming from the drivers side when turning left, and if it starts making the noise, i can ease up on the throttle and it will stop unless i put too much torque into it. Hopefully its somwthing easy like diff fluid(havent gotten back there to check the fluid yet, havent had much time driving it thus far. Any help would be appreciated, i tried searching a bit but this is an odd one to search for. Thanks

Muffler/exhaust system noises:

If the car has a "straight-back" type muffler (Ansa, Supersprint, Stebro, etc.) the easy way to tell if something is hitting is if the twin pipes of the muffler are not aligned with the bumper.  My car was like this and the exhaust would rattle against the inner CV joint and subframe when starting up and shutting off (the engine).

Driveshaft/shifter noise area:

Another potential noise problem is the shift support brace which could allow the back of the shifter platform to drop and rub against the driveshaft. My 69 came to me this way - one bolt was loose.
