I had it custom made by Pedro of http://pedroracks.com. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny. It was $445 plus $65 to greyhound it to MARYLAND from CALIFORNIA. It's hand made and top quality. I initially inquired about it last year and it took him months to find a 2002 roof clip to work off of. Once he got one it only took 6 weeks to make it. That was in May I'm sure he can turn them around a lot sooner now. I highly recommend him. Tell him that you saw Lou from Baltimore's rack.

I just noticed that your in LB that should save you some bucks picking it up yourself.

I have a Thule rack which fits the 02 quite nicely.  Not fancy, but functional.  It mostly lives on my Subaru, but the roof width is the same on both cars, so it is easy to move back and forth.

Here it is carrying plastic gutter pieces for my poly-tarp carports.

Yesterday I had to haul a bunch of sixteen foot cedar lumber and needed to figure out how to support them on a rack with only a four foot span.  I have a light weight extension ladder which served the purpose nicely.  I will definitely be using it again.  It made me so happy, that I thought I would share the idea here.

Two of the rungs happened to line up with the rack, so I ran a rope through the rung to tie the ladder to the rack.  The long end of the rope was then used to secure the lumber.  Simple, but very effective and light weight... what's more, it looks classy.

Rack capacity is limited in a number of ways... on a short little roof rack.

Once again, here is the Roof Rack Hack in Action:

I needed to haul a few pieces of woven stainless mesh which are four feet wide and ten feet long.

I put both pieces of the extension ladder on the rack and cut two pieces of inch and a half plastic conduit to fit between them, with pieces of all thread run through the rungs/conduit to tie it all together.  (Junk I had around, but cheap to replicate).

Overloading racks is a pet peeve of mine, but for the bulky, over-sized, not-too-heavy load, the ladder rack extension works well.

The 2002 could have just as easily hauled this load.

This post got me motivated to start working on my roof rack. So into the garage for a little tinkering.......

Still haven't decided on what's next for it. Do I go with slats......oak flooring would be the least expensive. Thought about teak, that would look great but after pricing it, well, unless I find some at a real discount that's out.  Maybe even something different like aluminum!

How about redwood attached to an aluminum frame.

Light is seriously underrated.

I've receive a roof rack that seems to be a generic build.  I have had it on my Ghia and on my BMW, but it was too tall.  I'm tight on money and restless at the moment, so I might shorten the legs and clean it up and see what I come up with.IMG_7322.JPGIMG_8718.JPG

Nice Ghia @bemyway!

This update to the thread and the tall rack you have made me want to go find an old photo of a Thule rack I had on my 02.

I had a height extension kit on it to fit over the stock racks on a '71 Squareback we owned at the time, and for whatever reason I had it on my 2002 with the extra spacers. Clearance!! :)

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
