Brake Lights Not Working

Recommended Posts

if all the other lights work then I would suspect the brake light switch. try unplugging it from the back if the booster and jumping those wires, then go check the brake lights, if they are on then you need to replace the switch.

beat me to it...

If it does prove to be the switch, try this:  squirt a little WD40 around the black plastic plunger on the switch, the press it all the way in and let it snap back.  Do this several times and you might clean off the contacts inside the switch to get it working again.  That's worked for me several times.

If it's not the switch, check the ground wire back by the lights--make sure the connection to the body is clean and tight.

Thanks. I actually meant to cross the wires when I had the airbox out. Was working alone on the side of the street, so not the easiest thing to diagnose alone. Today I'll have it in a garage where I will be able to see the reflection off the back wall. Mike, I will try the WD method as well.

Mike, your method worked, to a point. The plunger was jammed, I was able to free it up, but still no brake lights. Crossed the wires and they do work, so I suspect the switch itself is the culprit. Hoping someone local has  one I can buy. Also ordered a 3rd brake light from Daniel Stern yesterday. Let there be light!

Thanks all.
