Trouble With 2002 530I Steering Rack Or ?

Recommended Posts

A non BMW mechanic friend of mine is working on a 2002 530i. Customer said it has really tight steering like it had no power. My buddy (who is an excellent mech) confirmed and installed a new rack and pinion. Customer drove it home and around a couple days and symptom returned only this time it seemed centered around the no power steering feeling so it was agreed that they would try a new power steering pump. All seemed well again for a couple days and back to where they started from. My friend noted that the steering wheel does not want to center after turning. Anything he is missing? Car has 100K miles.

Have you come to any conclusions about the steering in the 2002 530?  I only ask because I have a 2001 525 and I think it has the same symptoms.
