Hi Guys,

New to this forum and loving it.

I ve just recently got hooked on the 2002 and cant stop looking for my own.

Doing as much research on this forum and others to see what would work best for me but it seems that whats out there seems to be the bigger factor.

I ve had several classic cars/trucks before but in no means a competent mechanic at all.

Actually to be honest have always just brought fully restored, trouble free cars and have benn lucky.

I love the older models, pre 1974 ( i believe) for the round lights and smaller bumpers.

been looking for a car which i can drive often, not a daily driver but not just a weekend show car.

I m located in Langley BC (just north of Blaine WA).

dont have a huge budget so not expecting a show car, just something reliable and not too many things to fix.

I do want to qualify for collector plates and save on insurance so not sure how much modifications i would be allowed to do thats not stock.

Found what i thought was perfect recently but the color was just not working for me.  I m pretty open to colors but i have to say that i m in love with Inka.  This one was turquoisy green ..... checked it out in person hoping that it would be a darker green as mechanically it seemed to be in great shape.

Was told that it would be approx 4grand to repaint it but that would bring me up to about 14grand ( car was 10grand) and just too steep for me right now.

Wanted to get everyones advice on what i should look for.

1) cheaper car that needs more work so i can get everything the way i want.

2) completly done and well mantained car for more money.

and of course if anyone knows of a good mechanic, body shop for these cars in langley or vancouve that would be awesome!

thanks

Nic

Forgot to mention that i have a $10,000 budget......anything below that.

would be great though

what do you think i should be able to find or expect for that budget?

Welcome Nic,

You're facing a dilemma lots of us have faced before (and it sounds like you've been there before as well).  I'd start with an "honest" project car (and increase the budget .... always increase the budget).

-Brian Jessel Autohaus up there has taken a more active interest in older bimmers than just about any dealer I've come across, I know right now their SEMA project involves a widebody 2002 with a supercharged M42 engine.  They've done some neat E30's in the past as well.

-If you're ever down in Seattle, Patrick @ Midnight Motorsports is a great resource.  There's also T-zero in Seattle, but they are more of a 2002 race prep shop.

-For bodywork, I know Hart's Customs in Vancouver have experience with at least one 2002, not sure on anybody else.

-I know one of the 2002 racer's up there used a couple engine shops you can find mentioned here....

**EDIT: I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting, hopefully others will chime in.

Hi Nic,

A few of us 2002 owners hang out at www.bcbimmers.com and meet regularly on Thursdays, but registration there can take a while since the admin is pretty slow. I believe the German Car Fest is in North Van this week, and there are always a couple of '02s turning up there.

You've no doubt seen the current local listings on CL, and there's at least one that looks interesting, although I don't know your price range. It took me a while to find a local mechanic I'm happy with, but eventually found a guy that has worked well. I'll message you my e-mail for offline discussion if you like.

Good luck!

Bruce

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
