Separating Lower Timing Cover Troubles

I've removed every bolt, nut and pulley and suspended the KF Pump. I'd bet the PO or mechanic used some strong stuff to glue the lower timing cover to the block because I am having a hell of a time trying to pry it off.

 

I have to admit I didn't pull too hard as I was worried about cracking the aluminum cover. Any suggestions as to how to separate the cover from the block?

 

Tried running a razor along the gasket between the two pieces of metal but I couldn't tell if I was cutting gasket or scoring the aluminum.

If you really got all the fasteners off, it's time to pull off the cover. It's unlikely to crack though if someone were really ham foisted I suppose it can be done. I would go at it around the perimeter with a sharpened gasket scraper, a little here, a little there. No chemical I've heard of will do the job, so it's purely a mechanical effort.

I did it on my tii, long years ago and I don't recall the total number of fasteners, which is the risk - don't forget or overlook one!

There are two dowels located on the lower two bolts. At work yesterday I had one that was VERY stuck due to a small amount of curosion on the pins. smack the sides near the oil pan to work it loose. just a little back and forth action. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE the oil pan bolts out. Good luck

I wouldn't be smacking it with a metal hammer. Rubber or dead-blow perhaps.

...and add some heat as you go, too-

it helps to soften glue AND the differential rate of expansion

loosens things up.
