What's The Best Deal You've Ever Seen For An '02?

2002 prices have increased significantly in the past couple of years.  Finding deals is getting a lot harder.

I bought my first 2002 (1969) for $200 back in 1994.  It was headed to 2002AD from a tow yard.  It had been abandoned by the owner due to excessive storage fees.  I still have the car.
I bought a 74 tii in great shape (and crappy paint) for $1900 10 years ago.  I still have that one too.

And I have bought another dozen or so 2002s from $50 to $1500 in various conditions.  I even had a guy knock on my door once and asked if I wanted his running 73 2002.  (I guess the clue was the other 4 2002s in front of my house at the time.)  He wanted $250 for it.  I accepted without even a test drive or a close inspection.  After all he had driven it over.  But that was several years ago.

Back when I was the high bidder on the '74 Turbo at $750, there wasn't as much interest in or knowledge about 2002s floating around. Most of the people who were bidding against me simply wanted the 15" alloy wheels on the car, I think. And I'm pretty sure that on that day outside of Trenton, NJ, I was the only one who realized the significance of the silver paint, fender flares, colored side stripes, and Turbo badge on the car's rear end.

Why so cheap? The car's trunk floor was ready to spit the spare out through the rust (we replaced the entire floor); the paint was marginal (we resprayed it); and there were no keys, so no one could see the engine bay. As reported in a Roundel from the period, I found an old registration in the glove box and gave the old owner a call. He had lost the car in a drug bust (for which he was ultimately NOT convicted, but that's another story). He was willing to sell me the keys and some spare parts for $20. Oh, he also had a receipt for the engine rebuild just a few months earlier.

It was a great car, and I put a good amount of $ into it and enjoyed it for 10 years before letting it go. Made a decent return on the whole effort, and it was well worth it. I hope its Florida buyer is still enjoying it.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
