California's current requirements for '76 and later cars has little to do with the Federal and CA requirements for '75 and '76 emissions controls effective in those two years. The current '76 cut-off is arbitrary.

"'75 models were all equipped with air pumps and thermal reactors. For '76, the CA version cars retained this configuration but the 49-state version no longer needed a thermal reactor. Both '75 and '76 models originally had 3 emissions-related stickers, which disclosed the model year: (1.) a black-on-white-background emissions schematic on the driver side inner fender just ahead of the front strut; (2.) a white-on-black-background narrative disclosure on the passenger side, inside the heater/defroster plenum; and (3.) a black-on-silver-background "NON-CATALYST" disclosure on the trailing edge of the driver's door. If still present, these 3 stickers clearly disclose your car's model year."

I checked my stickers after reading your post. My car is titled as a 1976, VIN 2371044. The (1) black on white stated that my car is a "'76 4 speed." The (2) white on black was illegible. The (3) black on silver recited only the date of manufacture of Sept '75, and (not the model year).

Stu,

I should have/could have been clearer. There were originally two black-on-silver-background stickers on the trailing edge of the driver's door. One disclosed the manufacturing month/year and VIN. The other was the "NON-CATALYST" disclosure, posted next to the VIN sticker.

Here are both stickers on my car.

Its been a year so I think Im safe to share my California DMV story, car buillt on 11/75, luckily all paperwork was lost after 23 year storage, made it much easier to register. Filled out a pile of paper listing my car as 75, got temp plates to put her on the road, made an appointment with DMV for vin cert and 20 minutes later had my plates, the clerk had a bro in Maui who had one and he loved the car, his only concern was that the numbers matched. Seems Ca DMV dosent have the year/vin tool and they sure didnt use it, a call to my dealer confirmed a 76 model year. Fact is I have an original paint o2 sittin in my driveway and if it was registered as a 76 I would of never got it to pass smog, period.

Best bet with your scenerio is take a look at paperwork, if it says 76 you are in for a bear of a time, on the other hand if said paperwork is lost you might have a shot. 2002ad lists the whole smog setup for like 2 grand, to rent, maybe DMV should take a look at that...................

Thanks everyone for the input and advice.

The seller has lost the title ages ago, and cannot honestly remember if it was a 75 model or 76 model.

He has applied for a lost/duplicate oregon title. When he applied for it, he wrote down 1975.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
