Would these be stainless clips or the standard non-stainless BMW OEM ones?

It's the plated steel ones from BMW sorry no more stainless.

won't give you any trouble if you take a few minutes to

(1) test fit the plate, then cut the stud off with a Dremel tool so as not to booger up the threads. The factory used side cutters after the nut was run up causing all sorts of problems when trying to remove that itty bitty nut.

(2) visit your local hardware store and buy some stainless steel nuts in the proper metric size, and

(3) put a little dab of anti-seize compound on the threads before installing the nut.

And don't forget to put small flat washers under each nut. It gives you one more opportunity to drop things as you assemble, but some of the holes in the sheet metal have enlarged over time and you need the washer to keep the nut functioning as intended.

I spread a good-sized cloth under each area as I work there so when I inevitably drop the washer or the nut, or both, I can find them. Trust me, you don't want to try to find them down on the surface under the car or somewhere in the engine compartment.

  • 1 year later...

are there better options other than this "kit" from ebay? And is this what I need? And finally, what do the plastic clips hold on? I have a 74'.

The plastic clips hold the upper aluminum trim pieces on. The metal ones are for the ends of the trim strips. The 4 long metal clips are for where the center hood & center trunk trim pieces meet the side trim pieces.

While it's nice to find this in kit form, you might find competitive pricing from Kpeters/Maximillian Importing, or even your local dealer (if they can/will look up the part #s for you!).

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
