installed the IE Stainless Exhaust on my 1600

We only got very limited driving done on our car for about a week before we installed the IE exhaust and could not be happier with the sound and easier reving of the engine. How it compares to a stock exhaust that was not full of holes and rust I can not say.

butt dyno's are notoriously wrong. more noise + more smile + feels better + i spent money on new toy so it must be good, does not = more power. I have done things to my cars that "felt" better but caused slower lap times on track. ooops! :-)

regardless, from what i have seen of the IE systems, they are nicely done, priced well, EZ, and look and sound great! excellent choice for a stock 2002 system replacement.

Would new mounts push the engine up or down? It will have to go down for more clearance.
I just did the same on my 1600 and have the down pipe very close to the passenger foot well. Is yours the same? Other than that it was an easy install for me too.

You may want to check your engine and transmission mounts. The front subframe near the steering box is another known weak point after 40 years.

The right mount is well under the engine, so replacing it should lift the front of the engine. The left mount may also lift the engine, but it may rotate it also. If the subframe is cracked, I don't know what happens. It would depend on how much it bent and flexed after cracking.

The transmission mount height is often adjusted to reduce guibo flex. It seems that every '02 is a bit different in this area.

Guts, Perfect timing with this posting, needed a new exhaust manifold {jumpin too many snow berms cracked my original injector version} opened up FAQ last night to post a Q about IEs shorty header, found this post and its a no brainer, ceramic coated shorty is airborne and look forward to install. the whole shebang is tempting but will have to wait, great buying experience on the phone and think I made a good choice.

So if the motor mount is worn the engine could be tilted, putting the down pipe at an angle that is too close to the floor.

Would new mounts push the engine up or down? It will have to go down for more clearance.

Just finished mine. Very nice finish and fit. Andrew at IE was a pleasure to deal with. I also installed IE's shorty header and SS down pipe.

I had to modify the down pipe support bracket; nothing a vise, a rubber mallet and a flat drift did not take care of.

Can't wait to start the car...its been 1.5 years!

unless someone dyno'd their car before and after, and documented what the old system was, there will be no evidence of any performance change.

And chassis dynos are terrible for measuring small changes. There are way to many variables that can not be controlled. Once in band camp I measured the flow of a new K&N air filter and found the oem paper filter was better.... Perhaps it was the sticker that made the difference.

76 '02 owned 20 years.....project for the last 13. I should probably be faster than the rust I'm chasing.

LET ME TELL YOU. I have over 100k miles on my IE stainless exhaust now. Could not be happier with it. I have beaten the snot out of this thing and it still sounds great and performs great. At one point I developed an exhaust leak underneath. Had that annoying tick sound. So I was driving on the freeway and I saw this piece of cardboard looking stuff in the road. Kind of a lump of it. I tried to avoid it but could not so decided to straddle it. Well it was a big tan rock. It whacked my muffler and stopped the leak.

The IE stainless system is well worth what it costs. If i put 10ok plus miles on it just imagine how long it will last for guys that drive much less than me
