quick question about oil change

Rob,

It isn't the first incorrect part I've found on this car, and probably not the last yet.

But, I've got to mention one thing that surprised me in a good way. PO had told me engine was rebuilt about 7K before I got it. But, odo was not working, so not sure how accurate that was. Now in the past 3K miles that I've put on it, it has only consumed 0.25qts of oil --> practically zero. That must be a good indicator.

I am sure someone can post the torque from the factory manual but I have always done it by hand--never had one come loose, lock up, or strip the threads. When I do it by feel I get it snug and so I can feel a bit of crush washer "crush" (I've always used aluminum for this washer) but not so tight that the crush washer is spooging out (technical term) and I am sweating bullets pulling on the wrench. I use a closed end wrench for good hand feel, would never use my 1/2 drive stuff for this one.

 

Here's a discussion on magnetic drain plugs. Always good to have those for the oil pan and transmission drain plugs.

yep, the longer one is length of my original plug.

and see how that old washer is well-flattened ?? Same happened to me and became a locked washer ...... replace the washer often !!

I hear over and over to replace this washer every use and I know this should be typical with all crush washers. I nearly always forget to order them with my filters. My current engine has over 160k miles which equals over well over 50 oil changes. I bet I haven't changed that washer more than 2-3 times. I torque the plug to 45 ft-lbs and never have any issues taking it off and it never leaks.

Same here. I rarely replace the drain plug crush washer, and I often change my oil several times a year (cuz track car). I also re-use nylock nuts, OEM head bolts, and install copper exhaust manifold nuts without washers with no problems.  --FB
