M42 swappers, I know you are here

Well, since my 1602 engine is maybe nearing its end, an idea occurred to me, that I swap it with a M42 one. I'm aiming for a sleeper, with mostly stock look, but respectable performance in a daily driven car.

So, the questions I want to ask you are, cosmetically wise, what are the smallest wheels that can be fitted to an upgraded car with upgraded brakes. I suppose that 13" are out of the game. Also, would I need to do some wheel arch stretching in order for the bigger wheels to fit?

Mechanically wise, is it the best way to swap tranny and diff with 138is ones, or there are some better options?

To answer your brake question, you'll find it depends on what specific wheels you choose.

Remember, the 320i had 13's, and the vented rotors from that car are

as much brake as any 4 cylinder normally aspirated 2002 could need.

13x6 Panasports fit over the 530 calipers on tii struts,

and they also worked over the Volvo calipers on the standard struts.

That much I know for sure, 'cause it's what I've run.

Wow, JakeB's car looks great, that's almost exactly the same look I'm aiming for!

As for the rims, if I ultimately decide to do this project, I'd like the car to be rolling on 13" BBS Mahles which I have already painted. So, since I'd use them, that probably means that I'm limited with brakes of stock dimensions.

And as for the engine, Jake's website says that 91 is a best year to have. Any particular reasons? Is it a USA thing or can it be applied to European cars too? And what about E36 m42 engines?

The E36 M42 engine will fit but you will need the intake manifold and the oil pan from a 91 for clearance of the subframe and the brake booster.

Jake is the man to go to with anything related to the M42 swap, he got it down to an art.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
