The legend

I usually don't do this but yesterday I drove one of the 02s to pickup Jim's euro turn signal from classic BMW in Plano and parked the 2002 inside the service bay with all the modern 50k+ BMWs and the owners. The Ms, the Z8s the Alpina 7s and here I was with my 6k 2002! I can't tell you the respect the car received instantly. As soon as I parked I had people circling it and asking me all kinds of questions. I quickly got out and ran inside to grab the turn signal and there was a nice restored 2002 inside the showroom and when I got back I noticed there was three or four other 02 parked inside a storage that also had some sort of a formula race car with cs coupes and xke, some American muscle cars etc. The service guy said it is the owners collection. I had to laugh because the 2002 was the only car in his collection in multiples. As I got back in the car to start it, I felt all the rumble from those M motors but you could still hear the carburated legend come to life with a huge puff of smoke as I turned the keys. A gentleman took his hats off and waved as he got out of his 6-Series. I drove away watching all eyes behind my rear view mirror. Its amazing how much respect this car still demands after all these years. She is a legend.

Ditto! I'm driving home after a brake repair attempt. (rear adjusters are crapped out) To avoid the rush hour traffic with weak rears, I took side roads.

Some guy in a gold Caddy said, "Yo! Yo man, how much you want for that red car?"

At the light some guy is giving me the thumbs up and said something in spainish that made me think he approved. His gf was smiling.

These cars bring people out of their day to day and into a common language.

Last month I stopped by one of the local dealers to take a look at a new 1 Series in my Colorado 02. I parked up next to the show room in a reserved spot and went in. In a matter of minutes every sales person in the building and a number of customers were out scoping out the 02. It took me 15 mintues to find the sales person I had spoken with before to discuss the 1 series.

As we chatted, I mentioned that I might be interested in a trade and was asked what I had to trade. When I pointed to the 02 out the window the immediate response was "You CAN NOT trade that car in! You have to keep it!".

Not that I ever intended to do so, but the response was significant to me.

I did that in my Touring a few years ago at the San Antonio dealership.

I was asked to move and park it in the customer parking spaces.

Needless to say, I don't go there very often.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
