How to check if my 2002 is a real alpina ?

For a 2002 I think the word "real" is too vague.

One can say, my 02 went back to Alpina and they put some or all Alpina parts on it.

Or, the dealer put some or all Alpina parts on it

Or, I or my mechanic put some or all of the Alpina parts on it.

This ground has been plowed many times before. Maybe the guy who hammered out that faux id badge had in his mind that it was a "real" AlpinA. IMO, if the car came from AlpinA (or went to AlpinA) and came out with factory build sheets (to whatever specification) then it is a real AlpinA - that is just my opinion though. By the end of the weekend I hope to be done with an article on my blog about a "real" AlpinA (2oo2 A2 spec).

Others opinions may differ, but here's my take on earlier Alpina cars before they became a manufacturer with their own VIN plates. Only the first two are normally considered "real" Alpina cars.

One: A car that was ordered through Alpina. Therefore Alpina ordered it from BMW and thus the first delivery point is Alpina. This can be verified with BMWs delivery records.

Two: Very similar to One... An owner of a car brings it to Alpina to be built into an Alpina car. Alpina has no records of these builds and thus can only be verified with ownership history and Alpina paperwork. These can include cars taken to Alpina at any time in history, even today.

Three: A regular car built from Alpina parts by an authorized Alpina agent. These are usually built by an Alpina agent like Miller&Norburn back east and Hardy&Beck out west. There were other Alpina agents around the world, I can't recall their names at this time.

Four: A regular car built from gathered Alpina parts in period. This and number Three can be verified with period receipts.

Five: car built from Alpina parts not in period, but recently.

There are as many variations of these builds as there are '02s left in the world. It's just my opinion that these are one way to define them. Some may only consider one ordered through Alpina to be "real". I feel that One, Two and in many cases Three can be Alpina's.

Cheers,

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
