New development. So i was testing different vacuum conditions and messing with the idle, and noticed oil spurting out of one of the valve cover cap nuts. turns out 4 of the 6 were finger tight and the other 2 weren't tightened to torque specs.

any thoughts on the havoc that may have been causing? I no its not a good thing but not sure if its a "bad" thing.

Not sure if I noted you sharing your VIN.. Your car may be either a 1968 or early 1969 (no rear reflectors, brake fluid reservoir attached to master cylinder, etc).

Wonder why the mechanical fuel pump was bypassed by that electric pump mounted on the valve cover? Electric pumps work better at pushing fuel rather than pulling it.

Your valve cover gasket is most likely old and compressed from being overtightened. The small nuts should not be overtightened.

When i got her, she had another electric fuel pump that failedso replaced it with a similar model. I honestly didn't even know there was a mechanical pump. Is the pump connected to the house I'm holding in the picture labeled "engine 2"the fuel pump? If so, what do i do with the house coming out of the valve cover?

When you say electrics are better at pushing than pulling, should i relocate the electric somewhere else in the fuel line, or possibly somehow put it in the tank?

On the valve cover, should i replace the gasket? I tightened the nuts to 8 ft lbs of torque as specified in the manual. Anything i should look for if they were over tightened?

Thanks again for all your help, pretty sure i would have managed to blew her up by now without you guys

Wow. I was just reading over some of the posts I put up through my phone and it seems my auto correct has been having its way with my sentences. haha.

So I spent a good amount of time last night, Saturday, searching for details on how to adjust timing and valve clearances and then a good amount of time trying to use all my research.

GOOD NEWS! At a little after midnight I finished up, started her up and took Betsy for a test drive. Holy Crap! these things are awesome when they run properly. I got her up to 90 going uphill and didn't even get all the way through 4th. Engine was running smooth with no valve noise and stayed just under halfway on the temp gauge.
