$110k BIN Turbo on eBay

While I suspect even the current $80K might be close to a record price for a bona fide turbo, I can't imagine the restoration of this car cost a cent less than the $110K Buy It Now price. So...even at $110K, you're getting a $110K+ restoration with a free car!

Others on this forum know more details about this car.

Meanwhile, on U.K. eBay, a 34,000-kilometer turbo, unrestored, today failed to meet its reserve with a high bid of 26K £ (approx. $41K) and a Buy It Now price of 40K £ (approx. $64K). Also appeared to be a great car!

But it's difficult to compare the two: apples and oranges. It depends on what you value in a classic car.

With the completely restored car with documentation from top shops the buyer knows what they are getting. With the unrestored car you simply do not. It can be low mile, but it is a Turbo and it depends upon how it was treated, and that is more important on a 2002 Turbo than on other cars.

Buying the unrestored lower price car depends upon what you want out of the "relationship". You may choose to do the work yourself, have the A, B or C type restoration done by X, Y or Z type shop. Totally dependent upon what you are looking for and the resources you are bringing to bear.

From experience I will tell you that it is possible to spend the BIN price on a Turbo restoration by top shops.

Agreed on all accounts, Jack. And that would be my point: the $110K BIN car could be a bargain for someone who wants, and can afford, a fully restored example, restored to a VERY high standard, PROVIDED...that that person's vision of restoration is in synch with the seller's vision!

Comparing those visions, however, small, easy-to-fix issues can sometimes create a gulf between alternative visions: one restorer's insistence on modern rims and poly bushings could drive away a buyer who wants period rims and rubber bushings. Easily remedied, but some simply walk saying "I'm better off doing it MY way !"

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
