Hey, c.d.,

This one, the third in a row I've seen with wonky interior descriptions, proves to me that their database is corrupt or mis-coded with respect to this data line.

Is it possible that BMW re-used interior codes and that these queries are pulling up modern descriptions that no longer match the old codes, or something like that? Because, otherwise, these queries are spot on. I had no idea that BMW would know where and when I bought my '76, 37 years ago!

Regards,

Steve

Thanks, c.d.,

And I can't imagine BMW feels much pressure to correct 37-year-old data!

I suspect the interior color data commences with the creation of BMW NA in the middle of the '75 Model Year. Mike may have a definitive date for that. I can see from my old brochures that U.S. model brochures dated 2/75 are not stamped BMW NA, while brochures dated 1/76 are clearly stamped BMW NA. I suspect BMW NA got going between those dates, and that would accord with when the interior data appears in the records.

Steve

Thanks C.D. This puts to rest my question if it was originally a CA car. Since I got it with the EFI work already done, I was not sure cause all the smog stuff is gone.

Regarding the interior, when I got it it had a sorry looking racing type driver seat and a black passenger seat. I replaced the front seats E21 recaros.

The rear seat was a regular bench seat blue in very good condition, which I sold to a fellow faqer in Arizona, and replaced with 6 series buckets. I am guessing nappa leather must be a beige of sorts cause the carpet and door cards were beige, which I changed to black.

You are a wealth of information and thank you for your time digging this up.

Btw. Cunningham BMW is still at the same place, but now it's called BMW South County. From what I heard, Mr Cunningham was a car guy that loved racing and his bmw's. Sometimes they have some of his cars in the small showroom and its always a joy to see them.

The reason c.d. placed a question mark after the "NAPPA LEATHER" description, and the reason I commented on it as well, is that the database c.d. is using -- while accessing amazing information such as selling dealer and original retail sales date -- is generating some odd and incorrect descriptions in the "INTERIOR..." field.

There was no "NAPPA LEATHER" option in '76 (or for any 02, for that matter). Your car's original interior was probably beige, and would have probably been called "BEIGE." (I say "probably" because the '75/'76 color and upholstery brochure refers to blue interiors simply as "blue" while the original window sticker for my car lists the interior color as "navy blue" and the parts listings refer to it as "marine blue.")

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
