Steering Box

My steering box turns smooth to the right, but is very notchy turning to the left. Seems weird it would be notchy in one direction only.

Do you think the box is toast and should be replaced with a refurbed unit?

Just because you feel the notchiness in the steering wheel does not mean it has to be the steering gear box. Check your steering components first. center link, tie rods, ball joints. Also can be an issue with the strut bearings, or the washer that goes between the strut bearing and top perch. Check idlr arm bushings as well.

...and did it have this problem BEFORE the reapirs ?

if this is happening since the front end repairs,

something is not installed correctly

you need to give great details about what was

replaced, what's original. Did you? or somebody

else do the work? have someone turn the wheel

from above while you lay under the car looking and feeling

for the rough movement, or looking for any of

the parts hitting like the center steering link

touching the transmission.

Got OIL in the steering gear box ?

CD. I replaced all tie rods, bushings, ball joints ect. I did all the work my self and I have layed under the car and grabbed the tie rods and turned the steering assembly and can feel the notchiness in one direction only. I got the car 8 months ago but have not checked the steering box oil.

I plan on dropping the tie rods from the idler arm and checking the idler arm for smoothness. If its smooth, that only leave the steering box.

"I plan on dropping the tie rods from

yeron the right track

but

also disconnect each outer tie rod end at each

strut - one at a time- to remove each strut from

turning with the rest of the steering

or just drop the steering links off of the steering gear

box arm - isolate the steering column and steering gear box

away from the tie rods/center link. please clean off the top

of the steering gear box SPOTLESS before removing the

red plastic cap to see inside and top up with SAE 90 Hypoid

gear oil. Oil check first. Much less labor and an area

you also don't know the condition of!!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
