New to Bay Area. 02 Club? shop suggestions? Meetups?

Hello fellow 02ers,

I just moved to Daly City/SF (I literally live on the city lines) and I wanted to know any information about meetups, if there are any clubs I can join, and if anybody has any recommendations on some shops. I've had my 76 2002 for about 6 years now and its my daily driver. There have been some bumps in the road but nothing too complicated. I like to do work on it myself but since I just moved out here I dont have the space nor the tools to do anything anymore.

Recently I've noticed that I'm lacking quite a lot of power especially going up these SF hills. The car sputters and spasms a bit on the freeway a little and sometimes even gives a little backfire. I'm not so good at engine work so dont really know where to look. Its got a new/used weber so I'm thinking maybe it needs to get tuned again after the drive over here.

If there is anybody out there that with any info that would be great. Preferably not a very overpriced shop. I'm not looking to put all new parts in my car when something happens. Or if someone has experience and wouldnt mind taking a look at my 02 over some beers on a weekend that would also be very nice.

Thank you in advance!

This is my 2002

Hi! Thanks for the response!

Yes, I do have points. I set them to .017 cuz thats what I was suggested. It's not backfiring quite as much but I still feel like its struggling a little to go up hill especially in the mornings. Cold starts are arent too quick and if the weather is cold, it can take quite a long a time to start it. I have to have the petal pretty much on the floor to get the motor turning without the starter.

I was thinking maybe the weber needed a new air filter but my mechanic in SoCal told me that I just need to clean it with soap and water.

I'm wondering, what else can I do to eliminate any possibilities in the motor from this lack of power; i.e. engine oil type, spark plugs/cables, air filter.

Thanks again!

P.s. Would you know of any 2002 clubs or meetups in the bay area?

Hi Duke,

Welcome to the area! The two best 2002 shops in the Bay Area are Sean Casey in Petaluma (my mechanic) and A1 Imports. Neither are all that close which is frustrating to say the least. But since your car isn't a 2002, you can likely get away taking your car to a generic German mechanic. There are several in the city.

I used to take my E30 to "AVR" off of Polk street in SF. My father also takes his 1978 911 SC and 2004 911 there as well. Probably same cost as the other two mentioned, but located waaaay closer.

Next big meet up is the Bay Area 02 Swap and Show in May:

Hope to see you there.

Hey @ Beck180!

Thanks for the tips. I had read about those particular shops and was crossing my fingers for a tip on a closer shop :P. I need to pass CA smog and since its a 76' 2002 and not a 75' I'm screwed out of the smog exemption. I'm putting CA plates from Oregon and cant do anything about it :(

Oh yeah, my car IS a 2002! So I kinda would prefer to go to a knowledgeable shop, even if its a little far. Look for my car at the meet! See you there!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
