brake calipers

A recent reference to brake calipers got me to thinking. My 71 has aluminum calipers and I can't seem to find a good reference to calipers on the site, at realoem or penske (like realoem but easier to use). did garden variety 02's come with aluminum calipers? were they only on ti or tii cars? which cars had these al calipers?

Thanks

To my knowledge - none of the 02 series cars (or ANY in the 70s, 80s, 90s) had aluminum calipers. Sounds like you have something non BMW on there. I'd like to see photos of these mysterious things!

Could these be Porsche parts? Any P car experts here?

early cars (to US VIN 1664761) had two pistons, all later cars had 4 piston calipers, differing only by size (tii and Turbo). How many pistons do your aluminum calipers have? Are they working with stock 02 rotors?

Sounds like a PO did a little switchy-swappee...

I'll get some pics and a name off the calipers. they sure look stock, four piston and the two hyd lines fit perfectly, working on stock rotors. will also measure the distance between the mounting bolts.

more later

Thanks, rebuilt these about 6 years ago using a rebuild kit for standard bmw 2002 brake parts. think i ordered from rockauto but don't have the invoice. thats when i discovered they were al but just thought they were all made that way. one more reason to believe bmw 's great engineering will always standout. anyway these units are ATE with number 148R on outside half of caliper and 26R on inside. Beleive these are not ATE part numbers. There are some other numbers that are too worn to make out on top of casting. can't find much online even at ATE site.

I'm attaching a couple of pics but they aren't much help.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
