My home shop and parts are open if he needs it in Lafayette, Indiana ( between Indy and Chicago). Heck I'll even toss in a tour of the Cat engine plant where he can see engines being built and dyno tested that are so big you need a ladder to change the spark plugs.

76 '02 owned 20 years.....project for the last 13. I should probably be faster than the rust I'm chasing.

UPDATE:

He made it to Kansas City and is about 4 hrs from Denver. Got him a place to stay with some old school friends in Denver and also in SLC Utah.

So far - ZERO mechanical failures.

Thanks for the kind offers of assistance and lodging!

My first "cross country" trip was from Ft. Laurderdale florida to Grande Prairie Alberta, via Toronto... :) Had to stop in Ontario and see some fam.

4008 miles (6450km) with all my worldly belongings in my 1975 2002. I was 18.

this august, my fiancee and I are moving from Calgary back to Ontario...

Movers will take most of our stuff, but we are convoying with a 1976 Mercedes 280s and my 1976 2002.

3800km (2360miles)

Wouldn't have it any other way. Man, I remember 90mph in kentucky trying to keep pace with the big rigs.. I miss the interstates.

Least being out east means I can make one of those events in NC. :)

Mr. Wegweiser, wish your friend the very best from me. Lucky bugger. i'm jeeeealous.

Did the cross country trip with a buddy of mine back in 2008, drove a '76 02 from San Diego, CA to Hartford, CT. Only problem was a broken exhaust about mid way through the trip, was fixed quickly at a muffler shop.

Same as me. My big trip at age 18, only problem was the exhaust. Stopped at a gas station in Macon and they pointed me to an exhaust shop around the corner. for about $100 the guy built me a new front to back exhaust system. Stayed on the car forever. :)

I have a feeling Chris will be in a 48 hour coma the moment he arrives in Portland. I'm sure he'll surface once he gets his bearings and his life organized!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
