My friend Chris is driving his freshly built rat rod 2002 across the USA from Baltimore to Portland OR. He stopped by Pittsburgh yesterday and we spent a few hours double checking things and doing some last minute tweaks. He's got a cigar box ukelele, a banjo, an iPod, loads of smarts, and a trunk full of tools. Kansas City tonight, Denver tomorrow.

I've offered to network him with 2002 nuts across the US, in case he has any problems. He's a mad scientist / genius / BMW tech, so as long as he can source parts, he should be fine.

Car has 10:1 Mahles, 40 DCOEs, and the coolest headliner in 2002dom.

Let's cheer his ass ON!

I've done a cross country drive twice in two different 2002s. The first time was in 1988 and I was solo with no clock, no speedometer/odometer, no gas gauge, no AAA, no cel phone.

It was a Zen life journey to be sure! (For me, it was Erie PA to the Grand Canyon, Vegas, Salt Lake City, DuBoise WY, then home....3 weeks on the road!) The second trip was Erie PA to San Francisco and back via Chicago, Denver, Utah, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, etc)

I am so fucking jealous.

We'd love to see him in Seattle. Our annual 02/02/02 drive (plus 11!) is Saturday Feb. 02.

I too am jealous. It's been way too many years since I've taken a serious road trip. I've driven the west coast (San Diego to Seattle, and back, a few times) in my dearly departed '71 1600. Detours off of I-5 over to Hwy 101, the scenic curves of the Pacific coast. Revving at 4400 rpms at 65 mph, both windows down, feeling and smelling the warm summer air. This was in 1983-87, long before 5 speed conversions.

I always do it right the second time.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
