Looking for experienced opinions on using Permatex Copper Spray on M20 head gasket. I've had some previous issues with leaky headgaskets on this engine.

I have used copper spray gasket on both a victor reinz and a Cometic MLS and still have had some leaking issues on the oil return passages on the right side of the engine. It is my understanding it is worth while to buy the OE from BMW gasket, as it actually seals...

Copper coat is the best stuff!! I run it on all my motors. I'ts on both my M10 and my turbo diesel which is 22:1 with 15lbs of boost. Love the stuff!

I spray it on both sides of the headgasket, the block deck, and the head.

+1 Years ago in my other life my uncle's truck line sealed diesel engine gaskets with spray paint. Same comcept, that's all we had. Bought Permatex the first time I saw it. Works so far.

Hi Steve,

That's good because I just sprayed the gasket you sent with the stuff. It's all retorqued and stretch bolted. Now the rest of the parts are going back on and will get tested hopefully tomorrow.

And From The LEFT :

the voice from backtrail69-Bellingham speaks da truth:

.............. " It is my understanding it is worth while

to buy the OE from BMW gasket, as it actually seals..."

YES - do not apply any sealants to the gasket except 2-dabs

at the front timing cover gaps. the gasket maker (OEBMW

suppliers) treat the gasket with sticky stuff already. the new

gasket needs to stay sealed in it's wrapper untill your

ready for assembly to preserve this special sauce!

No sealant required!

When I installed a new Elring cutting-ring gasket on my tii, the detailed instructions in the package state to "Center the the cylinder head gasket on the engine block (without using additional sealing compound)."

Stick (pun intended) to the instructions that come with the gasket.
