Custom Console for a relocated shifter car

My car has a 5 speed with the shift lever moved back. I love where it is located but I never really had a polished look around the boot/console area. It used to have just the shorty console with a ashtray and a rubber boot from a sunbeam tiger not mounted to anything. I decided I wanted to have some tunes in there and also make the console extend to surround the shift lever and provide a little shelf area to set items. I used the short console for a template and created my own extended version with some 1/4" aspen and a jig saw. Next step will be to remove it and cover it with this cool textured vinyl I picked up at a craft store for 50% off. I like where this is going so far and wanted to share.

I have room to add a few gauges and some switches since my headlight flasher and washer pump dip switch is missing...

Next Step- Vinyl, perhaps next weekend.

Looks great! How far back did you move the shifter? I was thinking of using a bent shift lever(ala 80's Scirocco) to achive something similar. The ergonomics in the 02 are a bit of a compromise for me....legs are just too long.

I didn't move it, purchased it this way. It has a Getrag 245 and I think it just used the existing lever position with no mod to the lever. The hole looked to be a few inches aft of the original, have since installed sound deadener and carpet so I can't measure. I think they did the cut hole turn around the cut out and weld back in mod that is common, if you know what I'm talking about. The ergos are perfect I just reach right down beside me and shift. I am not a big guy though, 5'10".

Ha, got sidetracked.  I started trying to install this again. I had a really hard time covering the thin wood I used to make the side panels, so I think I am just going to use original sides with new face plate and bottom, covered in the cool textured vinyl.  I'll post some pics so you can see it.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
