Is this part necessary?

I am swapping the automatic transmission in my '76 for a five speed, and collecting needed parts.

Is the securing plate, part number 11220616150 necessary? This is a multi-holed washer like ring that would go between the flywheel bolts and the flywheel.

I see this listed as valid for years 1962 to 9172. I have a 228 flywheel I am using, don't know hat year it came from.

We have been guessing what's the meaning of that plate. Some assemblies have it, some don't. One guess was that it's used with some flywheels that are somehow weaker material to prevent bolts digging in to it. Like late cast wheels but the years you mentioned don't support this.

I would use it if I knew the wheel has had it originally. But I wouldn't be worried without one. Just be sure that the bolt length is good for the flywheel you're using - with or without the spacer plate.

If someone really knows the reason for the plate I would be interested to hear that too.
