There is an alternative...the other road more traveled, less drama, plenty of spare parts, less reward, higher taxes, easier tires to find, but not necessarily less fun....buy a Miata. It has crossed my mind. My brother is 65ish, and on his third...keeps offering the keys...must resist.

with a hundred or so "advisors" sent to Vietnam by Eisenhower in 1959, end up with a half million folks over there by 1968...

I have first hand experience with both kinds of mission creep...

... I call it "whileyouareinthereitis". Multi-drug resistant superbug that is hard to get rid of. Spreads like wildfire and causes rapid depletion of finances and spare time.

"What a great old car. Such a pure driving experience. I will never sell this car. Still holds it's own. Hmmm... Running kind of hot, should slow down. Is that ping I hear under acceleration? Oh crap that popping sound and smoke is bad."

"No honey, it won't be that expensive. I just need new pistons and a few other things. Best to do the work while we are in there. It should only cost 2k in labour, maybe the same in parts. Yes I am sure, the Internet told me and they are never wrong."

"So the exhaust valve guides are a little worn? The head is slightly warped? I think it is best to just do the entire thing... The parts aren't that bad really. I don't want to do this again in 5 years."

"We'll the engine is apart, so if I am going to do the top end it would be silly to not do the bottom end."

"Trust me honey, 350$ for this oiled pump is a bargain!!!"

"I think a rebuilt distributor is important. We only run 91 octane in this area. Should freshen up the seat belts too."

"My car did overheat, I think a new rad is a good idea. Don't want to do this again. And a water pump too... Can't be too sure"

"The best time to replace the clutch is when the engine is out. Good financial sense really."

" you see, what makes this car rare and valuable is the mechanical fuel injection. Now is the time to put it back in. Webers devalue it. 1-1.2k for a rebuild is pretty cheap at the end of the day. We were quoted 8k 15 years ago."

"While the engine is being rebuilt I have time to kill. The front suspension is out anyway, so now is the best time to freshen it up. If I freshen the front I should just do the back too."

"I think the Internet was a little off on the cost of this project. I know, they can be wrong sometimes. 6k tops."

"A rebuilt engine would be a sin in a dirty engine bay. I want to clean it up. It needs some touch up paint."

"There were a lot of spots. Might be best to just repaint it. Might be a good time to repaint the car... To ensure matching paint. The car is apart anyway, so now is the best time really. Saves money in the long run."

" Best to take it down to the metal, do it right you know, would be expensive to have to paint twice."

"We'll you want the windows out for this kind of thing. You can't re-use this rubber anyway. Besides, it is drying out and cracking. You don't want to go this far to have it all leak and rust out on you."

"I mean look at the carpets. You can't have that when the rest of the car looks so good..."

Did i buy my car from you? FYI, it's almost finally all put back together, thanks for all the new parts. ;)

Damn, I was just given a 88 E30 325is for free today, car has a bad motor and the owner wants his garage back. I'm sure I'll be catching a disease after the motor gets pulled and before the replacement M20 goes back in.

Haha... No car like that is "free"

My dad tried to sell me this car before i convinced him to give it to me. I laughed. His new M coupe greased the deal.

Good luck with that. ;) Lucky for me, i have enough knowledge to know i don't have enough knowledge (or time or space or experience) to do this myself... So i am paying pros do do it for me (simple tasks aside). I.e this car will be ready for the spring.

Well it's not exactly free, it will cost me a case of the owners favorite frosty beverage. To learn more about my "free" E30, check my post in the off-topic forum and the insanity that will soon follow while I'm in there, let's do an upgrade on this...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
