1967 1600-2 : Some Assembly Required

@Jim - it's 3,000 ft2 in the basement of a warehouse. The really great thing is that it's comfortable to work in year round - cool (sometimes cold) in the summer, and warm enough in the winter to work in a sweatshirt. Only downside is it can get a bit musty and if it rains really hard it can leak. I currently split it with another 02er, It's a pretty good arrangement. I've got a few open bays, throw your project on a trailer and come on down to Louisville!

Well speaking of that large work area - we've had to vacate. Shortly after my last post we had a mold infestation agressivley spread throughout the basement. Cars, seats, rubber, almost everything was affected. Even the grease on old parts molded.

Here's the 73's subframe and the 1600's original transmission:

This has been a devastating setback. Happened mid way thru rebuilding my xj's motor to get it back on the road and has ruined a lot of parts. Plus I've spent 50 hrs or so moving and cleaning, with many hours to go.

When we moved the motors it started pouring down rain en route. I've added some marvel mystery oil thru the plug holes and will be turning the motor over to hopefully prevent rust. I also had everything covered with tape, but i'm still very nervous that the brand new rebuild is toast.

The hope is to have the Jeep put back together and running by the middle of September and then to finish reorganizing the new and much smaller shop. At that point we will finish the rear end and rear brakes as originally planned and that'll be about it for the 1600-2 for the year. The focus will be further cleaning and sale of unnecessary parts. Since the new garage isn't heated, I'll probably start work on the wiring harness over the winter.

Happy Build day to the 1600-2, its been another year. Other than Getting it off the rotisserie and some hard fuel line run, I have done zero to this car in the past year. Between taking time to get my 73 in fighting shape to make the trip to MidAmerica and assuming daily driver duties, evacuating a mold infested workspace, and spending way too much time trying to get the Jeep on the road, and stumbling upon a 66 1600-2, the 67 has been very neglected.

I'm not proud of it, but this is what it looks like right now:

But things are looking up. After much ado and shenanigans the jeep should be done this week. My shop is currently about 40 minutes away from my house, and in a terrible part of town - ex there have been a few murders in the parking lot. Found out today that a much safer, larger, and closer space may be opening up in the next month or so. Finally, I've got a friend who is much more mechanically adept than i am who is willing to spend a lot of time helping me get this thing back together - with a target date just before vintage.

Hopefully this new move doesn't take too much time and we can get working on the 67 again quickly.

How's the wiring harness coming along?

That's a great question, and a good prompt for an update. I honestly have done zero on this car.

The afore mentioned jeep is still off the road. we got it back together after a few delays in January. The machine shop screwed up and bored cyls a little too small and the wrist pins started locking after 56 miles. Had to go thru pulling the motor again, getting it rebuilt (didn't have time do it in house again), and everything put back together.

While that was happening, we focused hard on the 66 1600 that I drove to vintage. It needed a lot to become road worthy, and it took up all the extra free time.

Now that that's all done, we're getting out of the shop we moved into for the last post & moving to an interim shop about an hour away from me, until we can build a brand new, permanent, workshop later this year.

The new workshop will have a lift & a dedicated long term project workspace. I had originally planned on building the harness in my basement, but now I'll build it there next to the car. That way I can get the wire length approximate from the old harness, then immediately install in the car to check fit. With the new setup, I'll be able to take my time with any 'edits' to the harness and wire in anything extra I might need up front.

A little more than a year later, a significantly dustier 1600 leaves the shop. I think that I've finally realized that this car is never going to be at the level i want it to be. I think that with my best efforts, it'll top out at a really nice driver. Kind of a bummer when the goal is showroom perfect restomod, and especially after looking at the book of receipts. However, I think that coming to grips with this will remove a lot of pressure that 'perfection' adds. Now to come to grips with it.

I just realized we're 4 years in to this project, and still a long way to go. Will this be the year some significant progress gets made? More likely than the last two years, that's for sure! Since this project has started, it's sat in three different garages. I'm happy to say, We've finally moved it to it's 4th and final workshop. it's either going to get finished here, or never come out again. This project's not dead yet though!

I can say this with certainty, because I'm not renting space anymore. My wife and I bought a piece of land about twenty miles away from our house and had a 60x40 pole barn built. Concrete floors, complete with an area deep enough to accommodate a two post lift! I am too fortunate to have a supportive wife and to be able to make this building a reality. I'm really excited about moving in and getting it all set up.

Last (major) item on the agenda is to hook up electric, and then we'll pretty well be in business. We went ahead and brought the three 02's up ahead of time and they're currently making themselves right at home.

Babar turns 50 tomorrow & I'll probably go over and roll it around the building while making race car noises.

2.5 years have gone by fast. The 67 has been in pretty much the exact same spot for all of that - were hoping to change that soon.

I had put the 67 up for sale last year, but after speaking with a few interested people, I never made a deal. The car and parts are still for sale, but I’m going to start working on it again this fall.

Let’s get caught up:

Feb 2017 - welcome to the barn, found its spot.

July 2017 - friends RV and several other cars out of the barn so we could hang lights. Lift was added Jan 2018 to the area the red 66 is sitting.

June 2019 - dusty, spiderhaus, covered in blankets. Waiting.

We’ve been working hard getting other projects/distractions out of the way or at least buttoned up so I can bring this project into the work area. We’re close. Currently planning to bring this out first part of October.

First task will be a thorough cleaning to get all the nasty dust off the car. No water at the barn, so it’ll be a sponge bath.

By first part of October I totally meant first part of December... Better late than never!

This thing is nasty. It’s essentially been collecting dust since January of 2014 - and for about a year of that it got covered in bondo dust from a body shop that we shared a wall with. Going to have to do a lot of careful cleaning before we can even think about reassembly.

But it will clean up really well. I can’t wait.

Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
