just putting my manifold back on and noticed the new gaskets have metal on one side. Would this go against the manifold or the head?

I'd put the harder surface (metal) against the harder facing material (ie: facing the steel/iron manifold vs aluminum head)...but that's just me. Ideally the metal on the gasket deforms ever so slightly and forms a better seal (like a Copper or aluminum sealing washer). That's my take on it anyway.

I'd love to know the actual scientific / engineering logic for this, in case I'm mistaken.

They only fit one way. If you put them on the wrong way, the gaskets partially block the ports.

......AND YOU SHOULDN'T BE USING THE OUTDATED 4-SEPERATE GASKETS - instead use the " 320i " one piece gasket with

heat sheild which only goes on one-way.

I knew the intake seals were like that...but forgot or never realized the exhaust seals were similar. I always use the 318i shields, so it's been a while since this has ben an issue for me! :-)
