My first Post...I'm so proud.....

I've been lurking for awhile un registered. Dreaming of the day I could get my first 02 ....

I think i found it. i plan on a WELL USED weekend racer that is daily driven during the summer. Perfection in body work is NOT a key element for me more presentable than show quality.

2 hr ride to go see her. Here is all the info I have:

car was in po family for 20 years. welded closed sunroof as the car was raced at new hampshire a handfull of times.

3236 weber. stock trans. stock rear.

daily driven for 2 years then put to bed for the last 18 months. P.O. says it took a charged battery and she fired and idled. I asked about smoke he said he didnt see much. no color defined.

WHAT DO I DO ????/?

How much would you pay??????

WooHaa,

I wouldn't pay more than $250 for it. Do you have a garage to keep it in? I'm assuming your in the New England area. If you are, and don't have a garage, then this little beastie would work, since it's already rusted out. Rear shock towers look OK from the pics. If you are going to race it, check the other stress points that could be rusted (and could equal a death trap).

If you have a garage, and want something more 'refined', I'd look at '76 '02s out of California. They are the only model year that still require to pass CA smog laws. These are a PITA for Cali owners, and can be had for way less $$ than what we would find out here on the east coast. (including the cost to ship it back East).. You would start w/ rust free (in many cases) '02 to work off of. Word of advice: TAKE YOUR TIME IN YOUR SEARCH. Good Luck... Consider checking out the NorEaster site. We are in your back yard, and get together a few times during the driving season...

I do have a garage but hardly ever get to use it with the wifes car in there. I understand shes rough. The $700 price point is where i think the seller wants to be. I will be trying for less of course. Like i said not looking for a show piece more like a quick spray followed by some parking lot racing with the boys. I appreciate evryones ideas and oppinions KEEP EM COMING>

My opinion: Check front frame rails for rust and straightness. If there's rust in the rockers, poke-around and see how many layers are infected. (note: the '02 owner pattern suggests you'll buy a second one, always good to have a complete car like this one for foundation and/or parts).

If it runs and drives, go for it . . . it's fun to drive a 'beater' 02. -KB

I guess maybe I am blinded bu the desire to own. What make you guys feel shes too rough??? any specific points that my desire to own is blinding me from ..I agree it is rough but what is it I am missing to make a statement like wouldnt take it for free? Im just looking to make a good decision here...

And yes this would probably be considered by most on this forum to be a BEATER. thats my goal fun weekend racer i wouldnt cry over bouncing off the curb lolol

I see nothing wrong with this car other than a little bit of work. Yes I wouldnt pay much more than 500 bucks (If it has a clean title). But the body work has been done, it looks fairly rust free and it has some fair wheels plus a 320is steering wheel. All and all yes, go for it. You dont want a perfect 02 for your first 02, that's no fun! Have fun with it mate!

For less that $1000, I think it looks pretty good...especially if you can get it running first. Solid shock towers, cool steering wheel and alloy wheels..if you buy and want to sell the steering wheel, please let me know!

absolutely buy that car.

the body is straight. everything is there. it's prepped for paint. the dash is great. the steering wheel is cool. it starts and probably runs. the rust i see is surface. the motor can be cleaned. I have seen cars with great paint jobs on this very site that have a motor as dirty as this one...it is as good a place to start as any..

$700.00 for a running complete 2002, with minimal to surface rust, is a good deal...paying less for the same car is a better deal.....These cars always pleasantly surprise me once I drive them...

Bring her home after the successful test drive

Looks like a VT license plate on the front. I've bought a number of parts cars over the years from VT and all I can tell you, watch out for hidden rust. VT equals snow, snow equals road salt, just look it over carefully before buying. I also don't think it was raced, maybe a driving school or something bought not raced. There are no upgrades that I can really see done to the car that would suggest it had a past life as a race car, it looks fairly stock. Good luck!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
