Any other sighting reports/ scurrilous rumors/or even Lumma hallucinations?

I had a co-op job with General Dynamics Space Systems in San Diego in 1989, and I lived in Pacific Beach for the 9 months of the co-op session. I recall frequently seeing a golf yellow chop top 2002 parked on Garnet Ave. At the time I remember thinking that it must have been a custom job, and "holy Shazam that's a sweet looking car."

Bingo! Thank you for posting this!

This is a great example of how sometimes seemingly trivial or random information leads to a break!

Thank you, williamgruff! As a result of your post, I did a little googling and was able to uncover some very interesting info!

I found a thread in here from 2010 by the previous owner of the yellow Lumma tii that we have seen in Texas. He bought the car out of Houston, apparently, but casually mentions that it previously was in Long Beach. As in Long Beach CA! Knowing this and knowing that Lummas are so few and far between, it is very possible that the yellow chop top you saw in San Diego is the very SAME yellow Lumma that later ended up in Texas!

The Texas owner further mentions that the car came from a place called Brooklands in Long Beach, CA. I have just contacted AndyS, who confirms that this is the very same place that HIS Lumma came from!

So, williamgruff, thanks to you, we now have learned the name, address and phone number of the importer of at least two of the Lummas in the US. And, according to AndyS' post above, he may have imported other interesting vehicles. This is great stuff!

Brooklands USA, Inc.

This company's business is importing, exporting, and the retail sale of inline speedskating and ice speedskating products.

When I picked up my 1600 Cab in Port Hueneme back in 2003 there was another Cab in the impound lot. I believe it was a Lumina. I snapped a few pictures. You should add this one to your list.

Mark92131

Wow! Thanks for the info and the pics! I will add them. I knew nothing of Port Hueneme so I googled it and I did find this also:

The port of Hueneme is the only deep water harbor between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area and is the U.S. Port of Entry for California's central coast region. (View our Video) It serves International businesses and ocean carriers from the Pacific Rim and Europe. The Port of Hueneme ranks among the top seaports in California for general cargo throughput.

The niche markets that Hueneme serves include: the import and export of automobiles (!), fresh fruit and produce. Its unique positioning near the Santa Barbara Channel has also made the Port of Hueneme the primary support facility for the offshore oil industry.

The Oxnard Harbor District is the Grantee for U.S. Foreign-Trade Zone #205.

Thanks again!

Well, looky here! I have this car posted in my blog, and tonight I received a comment there from the seller!

So, I did some checking and, sure enough, I found a thread that traces some of the history of this car..... back to conkitchen, who did the chop top when it was Malaga, then sold it... it has since been resold again and it was repainted. It is for sale again, and the thread includes comments from several familiar forum members. This car is referred to as the 'cousin' of the black chop top (also done by conkitchen, I believe) now owned by esty.

Several pics are included in the thread of both cars!

I know conkitchen from the 320i Baur he has in that thread.... which (long story) has Baur plate #2565, which is the baur plate of a baur formerly owned by Michael Baur. That is Michael Baur, as in Baur Karosserie, the family that built the Baurs!

Small world.

Here is the comment from the present chop top owner:

Hello, this is my car. It was chopped by a guy called conkitchen on the 2002faq page. Then sold to the previous owner here in Florida in 2010, the original color was granatrot and was later painted malaga, as far as I know already before conkitchen chopped it. The previous owner didn't do anything on it and when I bought it, I repainted it added the rollbar and got a local upholsterer to make the top. It was always fun to drive in the Florida sun, especially at night with a clearsky, many people raised concern on structural integrety as there are no extra supports welded in. So far I havn't had any problems with flex, or scuttle shaking even after crossing the bumpy railroad countless times the doors close smooth as ever. So I was told the '76 also had a more rigid chassis then the older models. I hope she finds a new owner who is not memeber of the Original Polizei and can enjoy vollcabrio feeling for little money ;)

btw it is on ebay aswell http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261140164582&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:MOTORS:1123

Here is the 2002FAQ thread where this car was discussed:

Big news tonight, folks. Remember this car?

This is a 1976 BMW 1502 Lumma Conversion Convertible. You may recall that it was seen in Washington DC, and posted in BMW 2002 FAQ on 8/14/2011. It was originally from mye28.com, apparently.

Rather a sad-looking example of an extremely rare car, isn't it? But..... how many Lummas are there in the world?

http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/2011/10/1976-bmw-1502-lumma-conversion.html

As you can see in the comment at the end of that post, I was contacted this afternoon by a fella in MA who purchased this car last June, and has since done considerable work to bring it back to life!

http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/2012/12/found-bmw-1502-lumma-conversion.html

I will add more info as I communicate further with him. He will be sending along some pics in the next week or two. We really look forward to hearing and seeing more of this very rare example!

Does anyone know how many Lumma convertible conversions there may be in the US?

Stay tuned!

I am informed by Jerry and Cindy R. that they have put the Lumma Convertible up for sale, along with a 1974 2002 and a 1972 3.0CS. They are in MA. The latter two can be found on the BMW CCA website, but I am not sure if the Lumma is there yet or not. No affiliation, but you can find it here:

I am really struggling with the mixture of parts from early and later 02s on this very rare car. Part of me wants to appreciate it for its rarity; another part of me thinks much of the value and rarity was lost with that early tail panel retrofitted to a later car. Perhaps if the grills, wheels, interior (steering wheel, dash, gauges, seats, door panels...) were also retrofitted with early components...

You are probably not the only one thinking that way. Personally, I am very pleased to see that this rare car has been rescued from its rather hapless previous condition. I dont know if other parts have been retrofitted, but I do think that one could swap those taillights back to the original without a whole lot of trouble, to satisfy the purist.

Regardless, this is a very nice looking, and very rare, example of a Lumma convertible. I think we have spotted about 5 of them in the US, so far.

;)

Nice.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
