Instrument Cluster Rings

I've gathered-up my stash of silver dollar instrument clusters, preparing to test / clean / refurbish / sell.

While all the clusters have black face (no, not that kind), some have black rings while other have silver rings. Q: Does anyone know whether the factory provided clusters with black rings? If so, year and model? My only reference is my mostly-original '69 automatic,*, which has black rings that don't appear to ever have been silver (*the '69 will soon be a cluster guinea pig...). Thanks for any info you can provide. -KB

Never seen black rings on silver dials that were original.

But then, I've seen only a limited selection...

Thanks (both of you). I'm going to look for bits chrome/silver and evidence - or not - of black paint (none present to the naked eye). -KB

I have a WTB add for silver dollar cluster and have had no luck getting responses to buy one. If you can produce one like in the photo shoot me a e-mail. Thanks, Stacy

I emailed you through the board but didn't see a response.

But that's okay; I get a lot of that these days ;-)

Cheers,

Hi Ray.

I did get your email, I hit "reply" and sent you an email . . . interestingly, this is return-to email address from which it arrived:

Hmm, looks like gmail sent it to trash directly (I found it, thanks).

Gmail addresses ignore dots. You can use them to determine origins...

Erm, when it works right, anyway.

... Hi Toby. Okey dokey!

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the responses...

Upon disassembly, I found that all the rings (in original photo) appear to have once had a chrome plastic* finish, given they all have chrome on the back side (*the process is called vacuum metallizing, I believe). Perhaps the finish wore away after years of exposure and cleaning.

To renew: Clean, scuff and apply fancy chrome-ish paint. -KB
