The longer I stayed there (not long really) the facts would trickle out. Headliner major defects were covered by the visor came up after short drive. The replacement engine was mentioned about 30 min in. defects in paint at the 35 min mark, etc.etc. Me being a car-buying bumpkin there probably was a lot more that didn't get exposed.

Thank you for the input. Sounds like the car has more issues than seller originally disclosed. I had contacted him about a 1600 his wife considered selling, but was informed she changed her mind. Bill mentioned he had a "nicer" 2002 for sale and forwarded me this link from his site.

The ad says "no rust" but then shows a picture of rust. ??

Not much info, no price listed in the ad.

$1,000.00 +/- per side - labor is expensive.

Any rust restoration (not repair) is not as

cut and dry as labor to replace 4-spark

plugs. It's a gray area untill all the

rusted metal has been exposed.

$1000 per side to do what??

2002ad wants 1500 a side to replace rockers, the panel is 3 layers thick and once it shows as much rust as pic shows they are probly toast, looks like someone patched them already, not a good sign, be very very careful the rust rabbit is sleepin

Are we looking at the same pic? All I see is a rust bubble on the lower edge of the fender, in the usual place. The rocker looks fine other than some chipped paint. Based on the picture posted above, the rust isn't in the rocker.

NEVER! trust a 40-year-old car without dents and patina.

Very nice putty and sanding - and very nice body mouldings.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
