I was flipping thru some older Roundels looking for VINS and ran across these two:

January 1988 (pg 64):

1976 2002. VIN 2375775. Red w/tan interior. Blueprinted and balanced.

45 DCOE Webers, Schrick 316, 12.5:1, 3.90 rear, BMW close ratio 5-speed,

7x13 Hayashi Racing wheels. Lowered, cambered, dynotuned.

One quick 2002. Serious inquiries only. $ 10,500. Raine Mantysalo (MD)

Raine's ad included a B&W picture

January 1984 (pg 57):

1972 2002tii. Malaga w/tan, black interior. Second owner, 116K miles.

New paint, valve job, radiator, timing chain, battery, front fenders, grill,

chrome trim, floor mats, interior in excellent shape, but needs new carpet.

AM/FM, A/C. Ansa exhaust. solid car, runs good. $ 4,500. Mike Pugh (NC)

Wonder where these two cars ended up???

Jim,

Thanks for the memories. Here it is. -Raine

Thanks Raine! You have a great memory >> liked the e-mail history on that car. For Sale ad was in January 1988 Roundel. Easiest way to find it: Cover photo of Yellow barn with Polaris 72 3.0CS at Tulsa OK State fairgrounds (Oktoberfest '87) by Yale Rachlin.

Raine and John Hartge wrenching on your newest '02 at Lothar's place in May. Just like old times eh? Need to know more from you and John.

We both have the suspensions done now. I got Bilstein HDs and Korman Roadsport springs. We take the two cars, his silver '74 and my white '76, out pretty much once a week and check out the country roads around Sharpsburg, MD. BTW, John picked up his new 335is coupe at the Performance Center just recently. More to come... -Raine

My 02 has gone through a total transformation, it really is a different car now. The suspension, the 32/36 Weber and the 320is steering wheel made it much more fun to drive. I'm looking into fixing the roof now, getting rid of the Webasto. We'll see. -Raine

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
