Getrag 240 5-Speed Kit For 2002

I have read through all the forums and could not find specific information on how to install this gearbox into my 2002. It mainly refers to the 245 and there are kits availble for this.

Are there any detailed instructions for this gearbox?

Are there any kits available?

Thanks in advance.

It'd be exactly the same,

except that you'd only shorten the driveshaft about 2", and likewise the shifter.

It's not a popular swap... but the late E21 box isn't all THAT weaker than

the earlier....

It's not wider, if you're talking about the 83 320 box, it's just

shorter than the 80- 82 one.,.

Bracketry would be custom, as far as I know.

Thanks

Has anybody installed one of these?

Just trying to access the amount of work.

Have you done this yet?  I'm currently gathering parts to do it using the G-240 from an '83 E21.  Same as you were, looking to see what is involved...

Thanks.

One of the suppliers carries a specific bracket for the 240 conversion. I have a 240 in my 74 and it performs nicely. I did not do the install but it appears that width is not an issue. The bracket in mine is homemade and looks similar to the 245 bracket. I have removed this tranny to do a rebuild and it was just time consuming and not all that difficult

Hi

I ended up getting a 245 - its now installed and works very well.

I still have the 240 Gearbox - which I need to sell.

I ended up getting the brackets for both from 2002haus - the 245 worked very well.

There is one issue and that is the 240 from a later model 3 series would not have the mechanical speedometer hookup. Didn't it already have an electrical speedometer cable?

I always thought that is why you needed a pre 1982 model 320 transmission.

A lot of people doing the 240 swap use GPS speedos instead of mechanical speedo. You can get one that looks pretty close to the stock speedo.

The '83 E21 320i 'box has a speedo drive.

The 84-85 E30 318i does not.  And the rear mounts are different.  There are 2, for starters...

I have heard this gearbox is wider and requires more body work than the 245. What bracket would I use?

Untrue, its just a longer 240 4 speed
