Do the Hartge! It'd be awesome and unique. We all gut E30s anyway for their engines, so why the heck not? I doubt it's in the original car anyway. Don't let other people tell you what to do because of moral reasons :P just do it!

Not trying to discourage you, just informing you. Something that would be nice to know is exactly what you're looking for and what skills you possess. As far as I know, I don't think anybody is currently advertising M20 02' mounts but I haven't really looked into it. What kind of power are you really looking for? Do you mind cutting up your front end a little bit or would you rather keep it as is. Like I said, I don't know what you're looking for power wise, but an M42 swap is viable as well. You can get an entire swap kit for around $450 from Jake and an entire M42 engine and transmission for well under $500. I know that you can also use a stock late model E30 driveshaft with an M42 swap, not sure what everybody is using for the M20 swap. So really it's up to you and what you want, and if you have questions there's tons of info out there and we're always here to help if needed.

Also informing. Mounts are still available from multiple sources for the M20 engine. Again, it is a very well documented swap if you search.

Given the questions you are asking, I get the feeling you would be better off sticking with the M10 until you are more familiar with the car. Nothing wrong with it, just perhaps it would be the prudent thing to do.

See my blog for more information on the M42 swap (www.tx02.blogspot.com).

In stock form, the M42 makes 136-ish HP, which is only a few more than a tii motor. However, the M42 is a DOHC, fuel injected, modern engine and has digitally-controlled ignition. That's enough for me, but, if you want more horsepower, you can get up to 200HP or so with a turbo.

Also, here is a thread that weighs the options on engine swaps (though an M30 wasn't considered): http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,361274/highlight,engine+swap/

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
