Under the hood, under the car, front, back, near the shifter?

Any shiny spots on the radiator?

More info, please so we can help.

cheers

Where is the sound coming from? Forward, engine? Under your butt, transmission or guibo starting to die? Rear, differential, cv's?

If it's coming from the engine, could be "pinging", which is poorly timed valves or bad gas.

Time for a tune-up?

1. check your two motor mounts; if they're original they probably need replacing. They're flexible enough to begin with and when they get old they're even more flexible. And if your car is a 68-71, it may still have a very weak right side motor mount bracket. They tend to fracture with age and will allow the motor to sag on the right side.

2. check your tranny mount--again they turn into black goo with age, and will allow the tranny and driveshaft to move around a bit. That can allow the driveshaft to hit the shift linkage, or the shift linkage to hit the tunnel housing. Replace with one from an E21 320, or a Bavaria. Bolts right in after reaming the mounting hole in the crossmember, and are much sturdier.

Let us know whatcha found.

pretty sure Mike means the left motor mount. Check it. and the tranny mount. and the guibo for loose bolts hitting the shifter assembly.
