Mikepelly,

I am glad that you have entered the discussion. Thank you for including a picture of your cup holders. I saw a picture of your cup holders before I designed mine. Your cup holders are very nice. I like the design. What is the price of your cup holders?

I had considered purchasing a set of your cup holders before I designed my own. I have plans to install a clock, a vintage stereo, and a front speaker in my center console. After they have been installed, I would not be able to put cup holders in the empty space that now exists in my center console because there won't be one.

Is it because I come from the other side of the big pond that I do not understand why anyone would want cupholders in an '02.

'02s are the Ultimate Driving Machine, not a drinking conveyance. he he.

Simple solution is to place a cup holder between the seats - use this in my and son's car. Removable, capable of holding regular or large size cups. And yes it fits between the parking brake handle and the seat.

Did not put in pic......bought them from Amazon for about $7.

"Bell CO51 Octopus Cup Holder"

zero impact to anything since it just sits on the carpet on the tunnel.

Did not buy the car for the "cup holders" but since I do like my coffee something was needed!!

I see you have the cup holders on ebay. Good luck with the sales.

Here is the same comment I sent to you via ebay -

Here's a suggestion. Post two pictures without that damn, stupid clown. How about one picture actually holding a cup and another one showing how the holder attaches/clamps/screws on (I don't know how it fits in place) to the console?

Tilux,

For the benefit of the FAQ members viewing this thread, I responded to Tilux's comments on eBay. My response follows:

I appreciate your suggestion. As I had stated in the 2002FAQ listing, I am unable to take additional pictures right now. I will be happy to post the pictures of the cup holders without the clown when I am back in town: tomorrow or on Tuesday. Please be patient. Presently I am 125 miles from the car and from the cup holders that are in the car. I wanted to post the ad on eBay as soon as I could. I will post additional pictures when I am able. I understand that you desire to know how the cup holders are secured to the console. The answer is: "ancient Chinese secret." I'm kidding. Actually, the cup holders are held in place by friction. I'm not kidding. You can see from the pictures: the plastic part of each cup holder is held to a metal bracket by a rivet. To attach the cup holder to the console: (1) first, loosen the screws which secure the passenger side panel of the console to create a small crack where it meets the gear shift surround; (2) next, slide the cup holder bracket into the crack; (3) next, tighten the screws. (4) Enjoy your cup holders!

Did you apply for a patent on that yet?

Tilux,

I'll repeat what I had written earlier: I will post pictures when I am back in town: on Monday or Tuesday.

Please go to the eBay listing.

I have posted directions of how to secure the cup holders to the console

Tilux, I have plans to apply for a patent when BMW reintroduces the 2002 to the US market as "the ultimate cup holding machine."

From the comments made by Koblenz and by Les02, it's clear to me the car would not sell well in the UK. Apparently, the Brits would rather "stay thirsty, my friends."

Koblenz and Les02 may be pleased to know that my first car was a 1962 Austin Healey Sprite. I bought it in 1982 for $250.00. I loved that car. I drove it for about 10 years ... without a cup holder. For me, that car ... my first car ... was the ultimate driving machine. My Beemer is nice; however it does not compare to my Sprite. I consider my BMW to be "the penultimate driving machine," at best. I improved it by adding the cup holders. They give me a place to put my clown ... and my Slurpee.

A plastic cupholder that looks like the type you'd hang on the top of the door panel, a metal bracket, and a screw for $25? i think as you've seen, its not a good value. i am finding the design lacking too.

fwiw, i bought this fischer brand cupholder and screwed it into the right side console panel. all my passengers say it looks stock, i would have to agree. though not a dual solution, it at least allows me to store my coffee while i'm driving. ill post pics later as i am not home now:

Other solution i found was posted on an M3 forum:

last week at the Socal vintage show at Woodly Park I was asked to make these for several of the 2002 owners. I'm now making 12 sets and already sold 9.august2012update010.jpg

mike

ive seen your design, love it b/c it looks so well integrated and stock.

one question: do you find accessing (putting drink in, taking it out) difficult b/c of the shifter?

thanks,

bob

Bob,

You must be delirious. What screw are you talking about? My cup holders do not attach to the console with screws.

I'd love to meet your friends who told you that they think that atrocity screwed into the uber-interior of your non-2002 looks stock. They lied.

I believe that BMW makes a cup holder for your car. The BMW Viper II screws into the console. It comes in several colors, I believe. I saw one for sale on eBay for $80.00.

I clicked on the link you posted. The Fischer cup holders cost $15 each. The advertisement states:

"Attaches with Velco, adhesive tape, your own custom brackets, or screws (included, but you'll need to make the holes), or, providing that the location is suitable, also can be integrated into storage or other compartments in specific vehicles."

If you had made your own custom brackets or found suitable ones off the shelf, you wouldn't have had to drill holes in your interior.

My cup holders are not designed for use in your car. They are specifically designed for use in a 2002 with a long console.

redtop,

Keep your sense of humor. I think it is great you are offering something to the crowd. If people think it is too much then it won't sell and you will know. The market will dictate. Keep your sense of humor and personality, it really shows through your writing. Tis is one of the reasons I love the 02 crowd, down to earth.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
