Camshaft Question - Grind/Cut/Remove Distributor Gear??

I have a pile of 6 or so cams from m10's (e21 + 2002 I assume but no idea) and I also have a Schrick and one other (something from IE but I don't remember, box is sealed and IE is the return address on the package).

Has anyone chopped off the distributor gears at the end of the camshaft and built a simple block-off plate that is flush on the motor? I know there are oil passages in there for the base of the distributor so it may need a small channel in the block off plate.

Goal is to make it as flush as possible so that the engine could be moved back in the engine bay a few inches without needing to chop or dent the firewall.
