I was doing some work around the gas tank and decided to pull the sending unit to check the screen on the bottom. No crude on it, but are they supposed to be this color? Almost black.

Should be clear. You should be able to see clean metal parts inside. The black is micro dirt plugging the filter. Your picture makes the filter look quite coarse. They are a very fine mesh usually. Almost like cloth.

Almost black means you'd probably start experiencing engine failure at high rpms. Fuel can't get past the crud fast enough.

Removing that filter to clean or replace can be difficult. If you do puncture it during removal, all is not lost. Fuel filter in engine compartment is the last defense against contaminants. Make sure it's clean.
