Interested in selling the steering wheel and hub and also the thing that holds the ignition wires in the "pipe".

what exactly it the thing that holds ignition wires you speak of?

The plastic tube spark plug wire holder fastened to the valve cover. I think these are used on E21s.

"I ran that thing for 22 hrs at a time, stopping only for fuel and urine breaks on that trip."

Did you not have enough urine?

No coffee yet response...

You have to buy that stuff for new diesels with urea injection for cleaner emissions. Wonder when someone will invent a car seat with built-in "sump pump" and filtration system for replenishing the tank.

I'm sure someone, somewhere, has done it however. Gotta love the truck drivers.

Back to the 2002, looks like it used to be a nice car. 72 or 73? I don't think I saw anything about the year. Shame it got so rusty, Virginia mountains/Northern US car? Looks a lot like the scabby 76 sitting in our driveway, a Boston/Pennsylvania car. Died of rust in 1990.

73tii VIN # 2763484. I went over to the former owner Sean's place just after he had it sent down from the Boston area.

Note the missing front snorkle on the air cleaner..

IMG_5449.jpg

I had a spare one so I gave it to Sean as a "welcome to the club" party favor. I originally bought it from Paul Wegweiser when he was still in MD.

Rear tail panel may be used on my 69.

Starting to take the car apart

I can’t stand working on greasy cars, so first up was pressure washing under carriage and engine. Got about 2 of the 10 layers off…

Then had to fix the brakes. The front calipers were frozen, making it impossible to push the car. bunch of banging and prying after pulling the brake pads out got the 8 brake pistons moving again, car rolls!

Then pulled the bumpers off. I always thought the chrome bumpers were light. The front is dang heavy due to the brackets.

Took it for a drive up the street and back. Amazing that everything works. Clutch TO bearing is shot, but all tranny gears work fine.

Gauge pic after driving and idling for 20 min. temp great, idle smooth, engine sounds good.

2012-10-08_15-33-11_931-1.jpg

Then parked it and started taking it apart.

2012-10-08_14-31-00_796.jpg

This has to be the RUSTIEST 2002 that has even been successfully driven. Holy crap.

LF frame rail…gone. Replaced by tin.

DSCN5864.jpg

RF frame rail…gone. Replaced by air.

DSCN5866.jpg

LR subframe…completely unattached to anything. Where it should attach is gone.

Spare tire well and LR shock tower. Yikes.

2012-10-08_14-30-32_271.jpg

RR shock tower. This sets a new bar for damage. Shock tower almost completely severed.

And then I pulled the rear seat out and found this. Wood firring strips jammed in the rust hole to for the top of the spring mount.

Then kept taking it apart…

engine really did sound good. no issues reving at all. cold idle worked fine, settled to idle at 1100 rpm. probably needs tune up, valve adjust, idle adjust, new plug wires (two of them are loose). one or two of the exhaust studs leaks oil onto manifold. simple fix.

i ran it up the street specifically to check the tranny for you Mike. would suck to put an unk tranny in your car then find out it didn't work....

(yes, Mike is the new owner of the tii driveline)

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
