I recall a guy in Dallas used a similar set-up from JC Whitney back in the mid-80s, but grafted the control unit onto the end of the stock stalk. Had the magnetic pick-up on the driveshaft. Worked quite well.

That is hacked, but I think you may still be able to buy a cruise control retrofit as a generic item, wonder if JC Whitney still has them.

Hahaha and I though my E30 turn signal stalk was as worse as it would get. Do you think that thing was functional?

My Dad had an aftermarket cruise control system like that fitted to his Mazda in the 80's. It used engine vacuum for its feedback if I remember correctly with minimal electronics.

Worked well plus, if installed in a less ghetto manner, could be a nice period accessory.

I had cruse in one of my old 242's. It had a box that interrupted the speedo signal. One cable from the trans to box the other box to speedo. This had all the wiring to the control stalk. Then it pluged into manifold vacuume. It modulated vac to a bellows type actuator that ran the throttle. Worked very well.
